Chapter 8
“Let me go right now, or you’re all gonna regret this!”
Ethan, who’d just gotten the full story, went cold.
I knew it. This wasn’t going to end quietly.
When Damon showed up. Vivian started wailing immediately.
“Damon! Make them take these cuffs off! You saw it, didn’t you? This is how they’ve been treating me!”
Slap.
Vivian clearly didn’t expect to get hit twice in one day.
The woman-pushing 60-seemed to shrivel up. Tears welled in her eyes.
“Mom. What you and Mr. Su did back then? I looked the other way. You pushed Claire’s mother to suicide? I let it slide.”
“Now you go after Claire’s kid? What’s next-you gonna kill me too before you’re satisfied?!”
Vivian sobbed.
“I just wanted to teach her a lesson! Do you know what she had someone do to me today-”
Ethan’s voice cut through like a blade.
“We’re not letting this go. I won’t allow someone who threatens my wife and son to walk around freely in this country.”
Damon’s face darkened.
Vivian kept screaming.
“Who the hell are you?! There’s laws in this country! What are you gonna do, shoot me?!”
“If military discipline wasn’t so strict, you wouldn’t be sitting here unharmed right now.”
Vivian tried to argue back. Damon shut her down with one sentence.
I left first. Handed my son off to my assistant.
When I came back, Serena had just arrived.
She was trying to comfort Vivian.
“Mom, Damon would never abandon you. You’re his only mother. And you’re the baby’s only grandmother.”
“Baby?” Vivian’s eyes lit up. “Serena-are you pregnant?”
“Yeah. Just found out this morning. I haven’t had a chance to tell you guys yet.”
Her face was shy. But when she looked at Damon’s back, there was sadness in her eyes.
“Damon! Did you hear that? Serena’s pregnant!”
He froze mid-conversation with the military legal officer. Didn’t turn around. Didn’t react.
Vivian got frantic. “Damon! Are you listening to me?! You’re going to be a father!”
“Ma’am, this is a public space. Please observe proper conduct.” Someone stepped in to remind her.
Serena’s eyes went red. But she forced herself to stay calm.
“Mom, let’s talk about it later. Let Damon finish handling things here first.”
“There’s nothing left to handle.”
Damon stood up. Looked at them both.
“Claire spent a year and a half in prison because of you two.”
“Everything has consequences. I’m not gambling my career away anymore. Mom-you’re on your own.”
Vivian’s world collapsed.
As the woman’s wails echoed through the station, Ethan took my hand and led me to the car.
Right before we pulled away, Damon appeared at the window.
Ethan immediately went on guard. Pulled me behind him.
“It’s fine.” I gave him a look to calm him down.
Damon’s eyes were bloodshot.
“Claire.”
“My mother-she’s an uneducated woman from the countryside. I apologize for what she did.”
“Go through the proper legal channels. Whatever you want to do to her, I won’t interfere.”
“I’ve thought it through these past few days. Everyone who hurt you-I won’t let any of them off.”
“Tomorrow, I’m divorcing Serena. That baby? It’s not happening.”
I frowned.
“Your family business has nothing to do with me. Besides, the people who hurt me? That includes you.”
Tears ran down his face. He smiled bitterly.
“I know. That’s why I’m punishing myself this way.”
“Seeing you happy… I’m glad.”
Ethan let out a cold laugh.
