Chapter 6
His legs gave out and he collapsed onto the floor covered in broken glass, completely numb to the pain.
“I thought you were just upset…”
“Tessa said babies don’t come at eight months… I looked it up online…”
I laughed bitterly as tears streamed down my face.
“You’re a traffic captain. You’ve already handled countless accidents.”
“You didn’t know everyone’s body is different? You didn’t know broken water can kill someone?”
“No. You knew.”
“You just didn’t care.”
“In your mind, my life and our baby’s life combined weren’t worth Tessa missing a concert.”
Tessa had been hiding in the back, but sensing trouble, her eyes darted around and she started her act again.
She grabbed Brett’s arm with teary eyes and a pitiful expression.
“Brett, don’t listen to her lies! The hospital must have misdiagnosed! Or maybe she fell by accident!”
“And even if… even if it’s true, it was an accident! How can you blame Brett? He’s not a doctor!”
“You already lost the baby. Are you trying to destroy the living too?”
SLAP!
A sharp, resounding slap landed squarely on Tessa’s face.
But it wasn’t me who hit her. It was Brett.
He put all his strength into it, sending her flying into a row of wine glasses.
Tessa clutched her rapidly swelling cheek and stared at him in disbelief. “Brett… you hit me?”
“Shut the fuck up!”
Brett’s whole body shook as he pointed at her.
“It was YOU-you told me it was nothing! You said pregnant women are just dramatic! You’re the one who begged me to clear traffic for you!”
“That was MY child! MY CHILD!”
Brett roared, tears and snot running down his face.
He scrambled toward me in a panic, trying to grab the hem of my dress.
“Sloane, baby, I was wrong. I screwed up.”
“I didn’t know this would happen. If I’d known… I would’ve died trying to save you…”
“Please don’t divorce me. We’re still young. We can have another baby.”
I stepped back, avoiding his hand covered in blood.
Disgust. That’s all I felt.
“Brett, stop disgusting me.”
“Sign the papers and end this cleanly. Or I’ll destroy your entire reputation.”
I turned and walked out.
Behind me came Brett’s anguished sobbing and Tessa’s shrill cursing.
“Sloane Mercer! Don’t you dare leave! You ruined my birthday!”
“Brett, are you just going to let her treat me like this?!”
I didn’t look back.
Brett never signed the papers.
Instead, he camped outside my motel for two straight days.
Rain or shine, he just stood there in his soaked and dried filthy clothes, playing the devoted husband.
During that time, my phone rang nonstop.
His parents. His coworkers. All trying to convince me to reconcile.
“Sloane, you can have another baby. Brett’s a captain with a bright future. Don’t be impulsive.”
“Men mess up sometimes. He’s on his knees begging. Isn’t that enough?”
“We talked to Tessa too. She’ll just keep her distance from now on.”
Listening to their shallow reasoning made me want to laugh.
They didn’t lose anyone, so of course forgiveness came easy for them.
