Chapter 442 The Commander’s Calculus

The base commander’s office.
Langston stood with his hands behind his back in front of the floor–to–ceiling window, gazing through the slightly grimy glass at something only he could s
see.
“Commander Calloway.”
Behind him, a man wore an expression of open confusion. “That woman, Robin Neel, asked for someone, and you just handed him over without even asking why?”
Langston’s eyes stayed fixed on the view ahead. “What else was I supposed to do? Say fro?”
“It’s not that you should say no.”
The man scratched the back of his head. “But wasn’t that a little too easy? If word gets out, won’t it cause management problems?”
A faint smile tugged at the corner of Langston’s mouth as he turned his head. “Management problems? This isn’t the old world, where everyone gets a say. These people are lucky to be alive. None of them is in a position to make demands.
“Besides.”
He paused briefly. “That man that she asked for–Dave. You didn’t notice anything special about him?”
The man thought for a moment. “Not really. He seems like an ordinary person. No ability whatsoever. He’s been at Heningford Base for a while now, and all he does is manual labor at the market.”
“Exactly my point.”
Langston said. “If he’s just an ordinary person, why wouldn’t hand him over when Robin asks?
“She also mentioned they’re old acquaintances. And don’t forget–Robin is the one that the higher–ups have their eye on. Our priority should be finding a way to keep her here. As long as het requests aren’t out of line, we accommodate her.”
The man looked like he wanted to say more, but in the end, all that came out was, “Understood.”
By the time Robin and Dave emerged from the room, they were chatting and laughing like lifelong friends, beaming at each other as though they’d known one another for years.
Watching this, Ella and the others couldn’t help but exchange bewildered glances.
Hadn’t they…
Hadn’t these two been complete strangers just a moment ago?

How are they suddenly this close?
“Why is everyone staring at the?”
Robin asked, looking genuinely puzzled. “Is there something on our faces?”
“No… no, there isn’t.”
Dane’s suspicious gaze kept bouncing between the two of them. “But you two…”
“Us two what?”
Dave jumped in. “Old friends who haven’t seen each other in years. We got a little carried away catching up. Is that a problem?”
The group stared at him in collective disbelief.
Excuse me?
You literally said you didn’t know her five minutes ago.
And now you’re old friends…?
Dave clicked his tongue. “Like I said, we haven’t seen each other in years. I didn’t recognize her at first. It happens.”
“Uh…”
Truthfully, nobody was buying it.
But Robin nodded along. “That’s exactly what happened. Any questions?”
“No questions. None at all.”
At the end of the day, nobody was going to argue with Robin.
“Robin.”
Ella asked quietly. “Now that you’ve found your friend, are we leaving?”
“Not yet.”
Robin said. “We still need to visit Northreach Base.”
“When do we head out?”
“When they come to us and ask for help.”
Robin remembered it clearly from her past life. Dave had told her that right around this time, Heningford Base had been hit by an unprecedented zombie swarm–the worst in its history. That attack had killed or wounded over half the population.
