Gray sniffed her hand, then turned and loped off into the trees.

Robin got the message. “Go explore, then. Take care of yourself. Don’t attack any humans. If you need me, Snowy’s with me–come find us.”
Gray dipped his head once, then vanished into the undergrowth.
“Is she… talking to the wolf?”
“Oh my God, that’s insane!”
“So, her ability lets her communicate with animals? I want that ability so badly!”
“If she can actually talk to animals, does that mean nothing in this zoo will hurt us?”
The shock of what they’d just witnessed was enormous. They’d known Robin was powerful- but apparently, there was no bottom to what that woman could do.
“I’m genuinely speechless today.”
Drake shook his head slowly. “Martin, you knew she was something else. Is that why you agreed to come here?”
Martin gave a helpless laugh. “I knew she was special. But I didn’t know she was this special.”
That impulsive decision he’d made back then had apparently rewritten his entire fate.
Ozzie’s face was pure wonder. “Mommy, that dog outside is huge! I want to be like her and be friends with the big dog!”
Lily pinched his cheek. “Sweetie, that’s not a dog. That’s a wolf. Wolves are very dangerous- they can eat people.”
“No, they don’t!”
Ozzie shook his head stubbornly. “I heard what she said–she told the big dog not to eat anyone!”
His parents exchanged a look of mutual helplessness.
If the wolf had shaken them, what came next blew the last of their composure to atoms. When
the convoy rounded the final bend, and Shangri–La came into view–crouching on the hillside like a gray steel fortress–the entire group fell silent.
“Is that… a villa?”

“The shape’s sort of right, but it looks more like a steel castle to me.”
“Oh my God, we’re going to live here? This place feels like a tank!”
“Who built this? Is this even humanly possible?”
“Welcome to my territory.”
Robin’s voice was easy. “This is Shangri–La. Everyone can come inside and rest up. I’ll arrange housing by this evening.”
The group erupted with energy.
Nobody had imagined that in a world this brutal–a world where every day was about bare survival–they’d actually have a place to live.
Martin looked slightly dazed.
Drake nudged him. His voice was thick. “This place… It’s better than the military base.”
Before either could say more, the steel doors swung open, and a white blur exploded outward, skidding to a halt directly in front of the newcomers.
“Honk honk honk!!”
Cotton stood there, beady eyes bulging with territorial fury, radiating one clear message: Who are all these people? I don’t know them. Why are they in my yard?
Drake happened to be standing directly in Cotton’s line of fire. The man and the goose stared at each other–matching looks of bewilderment.
“What… what is that? Is it food?”
The words left his mouth before his brain could stop them, and Cotton heard every syllable. The goose went nuclear.
“Honk honk honk!”
Wings spread to their full, terrifying span, Cotton launched himself at Drake’s head, rock–hard beak hammering down.
You’re the food! You’re the food!
I’m the master of this place!
You lowly human, who the hell are you calling food?!
Drake had no time to react. All he could do was shield his skull and run.
