Now, after weeks of deep sleep and system enhancement, they were about to wake up as something even worse.
“Awoooooo-”
Right on cue, a long, echoing howl rode the wind straight into everyone’s ears.
Martin’s expression shifted.
Drake sat bolt upright. “Martin, did you hear that? A wolf. It’s been a month–the animals are still alive? Are we actually safe here?”
If Drake was rattled, the civilians were a disaster.
“Did I just hear a wolf howl? Please tell me I didn’t.”
“This is a wildlife zoo! Before the apocalypse, those animals were caged. But now? Who knows what’s happened?”
“Why did it howl? Do you think it smelled us? Do you think it wants to eat us?”
Whispers rippled through the convoy–but the fear was undeniable.
Martin frowned. “Robin brought us here for a reason. This place is safe. Don’t panic.”
He’d barely finished speaking when a gray blur streaked toward them from the roadside.
Screeeech-
Tires shrieked against asphalt. Robin slammed the brakes. The cars behind followed suit.
“What happened? Why’d we stop?”
“Nearly gave me a heart attack–I almost smacked my head.”
“Ms. Robin…”
Ella swallowed, eyes wide.
Directly ahead, blocking the road, was a massive gray shape.
A wolf. An enormous wolf–crouched low, easily three feet at the shoulder and nearly six feet long.
Its coat was sleek and dense, the muscles beneath coiled with explosive power. A thick, bushy tail hung low, and a pair of luminous green eyes bore into them without blinking.

“It’s a wolf! There’s really a wolf! It’s blocking the road!”
“Is it going to eat us?!”
“I knew this place was too dangerous!”
Panic rippled through the convoy as they got a good look at the creature blocking the road.
Dane whispered, “Ms. Robin, should I go out and-”
Robin waved him off before he could finish. “No need.”
She opened her door and, under the horrified stares of every person present, stepped out.
“Ms. Robin!”
Ella called after her, voice tight with anxiety.
She knew Robin was extraordinary. She’d seen Snowy, the king of beasts, curled up at Robin’s feet. But this was different.
This wolf was new. They’d never seen it before. If it decided to attack-
“Is she insane? She’s going to get herself killed!”
“She’s lost her mind!”
The rest of the newcomers were fully panicking.
Dylan’s eyes narrowed slightly. Something invisible flickered–and then his expression registered surprise.
The signal he’d just sent out… had been rejected?
That had never happened before. Interesting.
Dylan stared at Robin’s back with renewed interest.
His instincts told him the anomaly was connected to her.
Under dozens of terrified stares, Robin walked calmly up to the giant wolf and stopped.
She reached out with practiced ease and patted its head. Her smile was warm. “Hey, Gray. Welcome back.”
Then, impossibly, the wolf dipped its head into her palm, its green eyes softening with unmistakable affection.
