“What a spineless mess..
Robin watched him and couldn’t hold back those words
Like father, like son. Those two shared the exact same gut–turning way of carrying themselves.
That was when footsteps drifted in from outside, scattered and uneven.
Led by Cotton, everyone who’d been scattered had finally made it back.

A bone–rattling crash thundered through the stairwell as Ella’s kick sent the door flying. The solid iron door split clean down the middle, and that single kick left absolutely no question about the force behind it.
“Robin, are you okay-”
Ella stood at the threshold, chest heaving, her face drawn tight with frantic urgency.
The moment her eyes landed on the scene in front of her, she went completely still. “Never mind.”
The others hadn’t been as quick, but they’d all pushed themselves to the absolute limit. They filed in behind Ella one by one and fell into a stunned, leaden silence.
A collective, wordless stupor settled over the room. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed.
Can someone explain what in the world happened here?
What’s the deal with all those bodies on the floor?
Cotton had torn through in a flat–out panic to pull them all back. They’d assumed something catastrophic had gone down at the hospital, and for a stretch, they’d even abandoned clearing the infected and sprinted back with everything they had, only to find…
The fight is already over?
There had to be several dozen people here at minimum.

From the sheer devastation left behind, it was clear more than a few of them had been ability users. Robin handled every single one of them on her own?
That realization sent a chill straight through every person in the room.
“You’re all back.”
Robin turned her head and greeted them like absolutely nothing had happened.
“I…”
Ella stepped inside with some hesitation. She swept a glance around the room, and then a familiar face stopped her cold. Serena.

“You?” Her voice went flat. “We let you walk out of goodwill, and you actually had the nerve to come back here and start trouble?”
Serena rushed to speak. “It’s a misunderstanding. All of it, just a total misunderstanding. We wanted to strike a deal. That’s all this was, just a deal…”
“A deal?”
Dane shot Robin a skeptical look. “If that was really all you came for, did you need to make this much of a scene?”
“Eh.”
Robin let out a short, dry laugh. “Forcing someone into a deal is still technically a deal.”
A stunned silence blanketed the group.
Well, they couldn’t exactly argue with that.
Martin suddenly caught sight of the figure near Robin, and his expression shifted. “Commander Clark…”
He spotted Hector at the exact same moment Hector spotted him.
“Martin! I knew it. It was you all along!”
Hector was immediately sent into a frenzy, and he’d even forgotten the walking disaster standing right beside him. He lurched forward in a frantic scramble to get to his feet.
“Where’s my son? I’m asking you, where is my son!”
“And you, Drake, tell me right now. Where did my son go?!”
Before the last word had even left his mouth, a pale blue flash cut across the room. The ice blade was already resting against his throat in the next instant, cold and sharp and utterly without mercy.
Robin didn’t even turn around. “Commander Clark, this isn’t the best time to lose your composure. My interest in starting a partnership with you isn’t exactly running high.”
Hector swallowed hard. The cold edge pressed against his throat brought everything crashing back, and he forced himself to go still.
But looking across at Martin, he couldn’t shake the gnawing, hollow ache tearing through him. “I… I won’t move. Martin, just tell me. Why isn’t Xane with you? Where is he? Did something happen to him?”
Martin and Drake hadn’t expected to run into Hector like this, not under these circumstances.
They exchanged a glance. Neither of them said a word.
Martin drew a slow, deep breath and walked toward Hector. He raised one hand in a crisp, precise salute. Then, in a voice that came out low and heavy, he said, “Commander Clark, we failed to protect your son.” Hector’s eyes went wide with a raw, shattering fury. “What does that mean? What are you telling me? Don’t
