The mission had fallen apart, and now their commanding officer had tracked them down. Martin and Drake had wrestled with this throughout everything, but they were soldiers to their core, and what had to be faced eventually had to be faced.

Their presence had already brought trouble down on Robin and the others, and that sat heavy.

Saying it all out loud left Martin’s ears burning with quiet shame.

He couldn’t quite bring himself to meet Robin’s eyes. She’d poured everything she had into helping them from the very beginning, and now they were the ones walking away.

What he hadn’t expected was that Robin didn’t seem the least bit surprised. She just smiled, like she’d seen this coming all along.

This was the Martin she knew.

If he hadn’t made this decision today, it honestly would’ve felt wrong for who he was.

“If you’re going back, I’m not going to stand in your way.“!

Hector hadn’t expected her to relent that fast. He blinked, and then a visible wave of relief broke across his

face.

The moment Martin and Drake were back at the base, he was going to make them pay for everything they’d done.

But Robin’s voice cut back through in the very next breath. “That said, you both just confirmed we’re in a cooperative arrangement now. So in the interest of starting things off right, Commander Clark, you wouldn’t mind if we paid Redwood a visit, would you?”

Hector’s smile froze solid. “What… did you just say?”

“You have a problem with that?”

Robin’s brow furrowed. “Redwood Military Base, supposedly one of the most formidable operations around, and you’re going to be this small about it? Or are you saying you never intended to cooperate in good faith, and everything you said earlier was a bluff?”

Serena shook her head quickly. “No, no, of course not. We meant every word, we’d never mislead you. It’s just… this is a lot to drop on us without warning. We’d need to go back and clear it with the higher–ups first…

“After all, we’re not the decision–makers here. Something as significant as hosting an important visitor at the base isn’t something we can authorize on our own…”

“Ah. I see.”

Robin nodded like it all made perfect sense, and she was being remarkably reasonable about it. “Alright,

Robin looked at him like he’d just said something spectacularly dim. “I reckon I’ve made myself very clear on that subject matter.”

“They just said they’re willing to come with us. What you’re doing is completely unreasonable…”

Robin didn’t let him finish. Her eyes went sharp and cold in an instant. “Unreasonable?”

A slow, dangerous smile crossed her face. “Commander Clark, are you genuinely this confused about your situation? Or are you actually trying to negotiate with me?

“Open your eyes and take a good, hard look. Right now, you’re at my mercy. Your life is in my hands. What gives you the right to raise your voice at me?

“You want those two back at your base? Fine, I’ll allow it. But me coming along as your cooperative partner? That’s hardly an unreasonable ask.

“You said you couldn’t make the call yourselves, so I’m giving you time to consult your superiors. And somehow, that still isn’t good enough?”

Hector’s entire body trembled with barely contained fury.

This woman is absolutely insufferable.

She’s arrogant, completely unreasonable, and utterly domineering.

Hector had never been made to swallow this kind of humiliation in his entire life, and yet right now, there was nothing he could do about any of it.

Exactly as Robin had said, his life was in her hands. They were entirely at her mercy, without a single inch of room to push back.
