Chapter 196 No One Came
“We’re already here, and nobody came out to greet us. Is this really how your base treats its guests?”
Finished
Before Serena could respond, Lyle cut her off. “You think our commander sees just anyone? They’re out of the base and won’t be back until tomorrow.”
Robin’s eyes narrowed slightly. Serena rushed to fill the silence. “That’s the truth, I’m afraid…”
“We genuinely didn’t mean to be dismissive. We only found out they’d left after we got back ourselves. Since we’d already agreed to meet today, we have to ask you to wait one more day.
“Please stay with us tonight. If you’d like, I can have someone show you around the base.”
Ella glanced over at Robin.
“Understood,” Robin said, her tone even. “Then we’ll leave it in your hands, Captain Serena. We’ve been on the road all day, and the rest would do us good.”
The tension in Serena’s shoulders eased just a fraction. “Of course, of course. Right this way, everyone…”
When the route curved back toward Centerville, Dylan raised an eyebrow. “So your base’s idea of hospitality is putting your guests up in Centerville?
“All those townhouses, and you can’t spare a single one for visitors? We’re supposed to be partners. That’s not a great look for your side.”
Serena pressed the back of her hand against her damp brow. She’d known this group wouldn’t be easy.
There was nothing she could do about it, though. She kept moving. “There are rules about this. Innerville is a private residential zone, and arranging accommodations there isn’t within my authority.
“Bringing you through today was purely for the tour. Centerville is where the guest rooms are, and they’ve all been prepared. Please follow me…”
Ella drew out the word, her voice honeyed and pointed.
“So the tour was really just a chance to show off, wasn’t it? Since Outerville looks like a flisaster zone. nobody would believe it’s a major base from that alone. Innerville was the saving grace.”
The color drained from Serena’s face, then flooded back in. She had her orders, and she swallowed the humiliation whole. “That’s not it at all. You’re reading too much into this…”
Robin smiled faintly. “Alright. If you say we’re reading too much into it, we’ll take your word for it. Lead the way.”
Centervilled’s guest rooms had been prepared in advance. Three rooms in total: one for Robin and Ella. one for Martin and Drake, and one for Dylan alone.
Every room was clean and orderly, without a single thing to fault.
Before leaving. Serena posted two guards at the door.

“These are our base’s security personnel. They’ll be stationed here to keep you safe. If you need anything, feel free to ask them directly.”,
“I’d rather you didn’t,” Robin told her plainly. “I don’t sleep well with people posted outside my door.”
Serena blinked. “I… I can have them stand further back.”
“Further back won’t work either,” Robin said. “We don’t need anything attended to, and we don’t need protection. Take them with you.”
A flash of discomfort crossed Serena’s face.
“That’s not really how things are done here,” she said, her voice going a little stiff. “You’re honored guests of our base. If something happened, that would fall on us.”
Robin tilted her head and asked, her smile perfectly calm, “Are they here to protect us, or to watch us?
“And if it’s protection you’re offering, do you honestly think I need it?”
Serena hadn’t expected her to put it that plainly. The embarrassment hit like a physical blow.
What choice did she have, though?
