End Times, Surviving with My Beastly Army novel Chapter 197

Chapter 197 Fools

Crusher

The two guards exchanged a glance and immediately tripped over each other. “Captain Serena, that was absolutely brilliant.”

Serena let out a cold snort, and some of the tightness in her chest finally eased.

“Robin…”

The moment their escorts were gone, Ella started to say something. Robin raised one finger and pressed it to her lips.

Ella cut herself off and stared, completely lost.

Robin walked to the nightstand and reached beneath the lamp shade, pulling out something roughly the size of a fingernail.

A listening device. Exactly what she’d expected.

That wasn’t all. There was another one on the nightstand across the bed, and another tucked beneath the bathroom sink. By the time Robin finished sweeping the room, she’d pulled out five bugs in total.

“How little does he trust us, exactly?”

Ella tugged at the corner of her mouth, half-laughing. “I didn’t think we’d rate this much attention from Redwood Military Base. In a strange way, that’s actually a compliment.”

“Couldn’t agree more,” Robin said.

She tossed the entire handful of bugs straight into the washbasin.

Ella instinctively reached out to stop her, eyes going wide. “Robin, if you wreck all of those, won’t they know we found them?”

“Good,” Robin said, her voice completely unbothered.

She exhaled with quiet amusement. “That’s the whole point. I want them to know their little tricks don’t

work on me.”

Redwood Military Base had too many games running at once. If she didn’t send a message right now, this group might actually start thinking that having her on their turf meant they could bend her however they liked.

A high, piercing wail of electrical feedback ripped through the monitoring room without warning. Serena felt it drive straight into her eardrums like a hot needle.

She yanked her headset off and pressed a hand over her throbbing ear, her expression going dark. “What happened? Why is the feed dead?”

The people around her pulled their headsets off in quick succession. “Captain Serena, we’ve lost the signal too. Bugs don’t all fail at the same time on their own. Unless they brought jamming equipment, the only explanation is that they found every single one.”

Serena fell silent for a moment, her jaw tight.

Fmished

She drove her fist down onto the table. They hadn’t caught a single usable word from that room.

They’d planted that many devices, and every last one had been uncovered in almost no time at all. “Captain Serena, who exactly are these people?”

Someone finally broke and asked. “There are only five of them. I heard from Lyle it’s just some small-time base trying to worm their way into an alliance with us. Is it really worth all this?”

The irritation that surged through Serena was instant and vicious. She rounded on him without hesitation. “If you’ve got nothing useful to say, keep your mouth shut. Lyle said this, Lyle said that. Since when is Lyle your source of truth on anything?”

The man opened his mouth, found nothing to say, and pressed his lips together with a sullen look.

Serena still wasn’t satisfied. She slammed her headset down onto the table, the impact cracking through the room.

“Get me two people right now. I want that group under constant watch. Everywhere they go, everyone they talk to, every single word out of their mouths. All of it gets reported back to me. Not one detail gets left out.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“I refuse to believe it,” Serena said, pulling in a slow, steadying breath.

“They’re on our turf. There’s nowhere they can go that we won’t see. Did they honestly think they could vanish on us?”

With every bug in the room gone, the quiet didn’t last long before a knock broke through it.

“Who is it?”

Ella didn’t reach for the door right away. She stood just behind it and kept her voice low.

“It’s us,” Martin and Drake answered from the other side.

Ella pulled the door open. It wasn’t just the two of them. Dylan had come along as well.

The moment Serena’s group had cleared out, everyone had drifted to the same room without needing to say a word.

“Come in,” Robin said.
