End Times, Surviving with My Beastly Army novel Chapter 203

Chapter 203 It’s Impossible

**Finished

Zelda had convinced herself that Noah’s patrol position was enough. She’d paid a price she didn’t like to think about, but at least Noah hadn’t abandoned her entirely. He ran around with other women, but he still called her his girlfriend.

When she’d first found out, she’d fought hhn on it more tharronce. After he’d hit her a few times, she’d forced herself to accept it.

The old world was gone. Law and order had collapsed with everything else, and none of those rules applied anymore.

In a place like this, even a crumb of authority could lift someone above the rest overnight.

If women threw themselves at Noah just to survive, that was simply the reality of things.

Noah could do whatever he wanted out there, as long as he remembered that she was home.

It had cost Zelda everything to make her peace with that, but she’d done it. She’d even carved out a small, bitter pride from being a patrol officer’s girlfriend, and somewhere in that thin sliver of borrowed power, she’d lost herself completely.

But right now, it felt like Robin had torn that pride right off her.

“We’re terribly sorry about all of this, Ms. Neel. We The enforcers put on another display of contrition truly didn’t expect anything like this to happen. Thank goodness we arrived before things went somewhere truly unrecoverable…”

The implication hung in the air, thick and obvious. They were quietly trying to bury the fact that they’d been tailing Robin the entire time, watching the whole scene unfold without lifting a finger, and now they were shedding responsibility as fast as they could manage.

Robin didn’t have the patience to untangle that particular mess. She let out a slow, unbothered laugh. “Funny. I didn’t come here expecting to watch a patrol officer act this brazen in broad daylight. I have to say, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in how this base is run.”

Both enforcers flushed at the barely-veiled barb, but they couldn’t argue against a single word of it. All they could do was level a scorching glare at Noah and Zelda.

Noah and Zelda caught that glare, and the warmth drained out of them both at once.

“Wait, please… I’m sure there’s a misunderstanding somewhere in here…”

“What misunderstanding?”

Robin leaned into the opening without a shred of mercy. “You literally ordered your people to take me down. I’ll admit, that caught me off guard. I was starting to wonder if this so-called major base was actually just a front for a bandit operation. That’s the only thing that would explain any of this”

Every word she added stripped another layer of composure off the room.

Backed into a corner, the two enforcers exchanged a look and dropped even lower. “This was entirely a

Failure un our people’s part, Ms. Neel. Please be assured that we’ll deal with both of them seriously once this is settled. You have our word.”

The words sounded right but they were pure delaying tactic. In their estimation, someone of Robin’s standing wouldn’t waste time nursing a grudge over a nobody patrol officer

Say the right things, case the tension, and the whole mess would quietly dissolve.

They’d badly underestimated exactly how little Robin was prepared to let go.

“Once this is settled,” Robin said, her voice flat and cold. “And when exactly is that?

“If a punishment can happen later, it can happen right now. I don’t see any reason to drag this out. Give me something I’m satisfied with, and give it to me immediately.”

“We…”

The two enforcers exchanged another glance, and neither moved to speak. The honest truth was that they didn’t have real authority over Noah’s situation. Someone like him, with no genuine merit who’d still landed a Centerville posting, had to have connections somewhere above them.

If he was tied to someone powerful and they acted against him, the backlash would fall squarely on their own heads.

Neither of them wanted to carry that risk.

“I see,” Robin said, stretching the words out.

“Then I’ll take this straight to Captain Serena. I’m certain she can handle it properly.”

“Captain Serena…”

Noah went completely blank.

The Serena he was thinking of?

The one who actually commanded authority in Innerville?

Robin had direct access to her? Who exactly was Robin?

Γ

The instant the enforcers heard Serena’s name, they bit down hard and made their decision. “Ms. Neel, this really is a small matter. There’s absolutely no reason to involve Captain Serena. If you want this resolved right now, we’ll strip him of his patrol position on the spot. Would that be satisfactory?”

Noah’s composure fell apart completely. “Please, you have to believe me, this is all a misunderstanding. K never meant any of this. I had absolutely no idea she was an honored guest of our base…

“If I’d known from the start, I never would have…”
