“Scared?”
Robin raised a brow.
The man nodded and tried to explain. “Chase had connections with the patrollers. If someone found his body out here by the mouth of this alley, there’d be trouble
“When I moved on you, I thought you were someone coming to investigate. I was afraid they were going to come for me…”
Robin asked, “If you were that scared, why didn’t you leave?”
The man pressed his lips together and said, quietly, “I… when I was half–conscious, I heard you. You said that if I was still here when you came back, you’d take me with you…”
The corner of Robin’s mouth tipped up despite herself.
“You’re surprisingly honest.”
She said, “What’s your
“Ivan Simmons.”
“Ivan Simmons?”
name?”
Robin repeated it. “That’s a distinctive one.”
Ivan dropped his head, a little embarrassed, then jerked it back up, his face full of naked hope. “Did you- did you really mean it? You’ll take me with you?”
Robin replied, “If I were lying, I wouldn’t have come back here.”
Ivan’s eyes lit up.
His voice caught in his throat. “Thank you. Truly, thank you…”
“Let’s go.”
Robin started back toward the mouth of the alley. “Let me be clear. I agreed to take you with me. Whether you can actually keep up is a separate question. I’m not going to stop and wait for you.”
Ivan nodded hard. “I understand. I do. You’re willing to let me come at all. I’m grateful. I won’t slow you down.”
“Good”
Robin liked dealing with smart people.
Ivan was as good as his word. He was bleeding from everywhere, and his body was in temible shape. but he didn’t make a sound the entire way. He just stumbled along behind her, keeping pace.
Robin cast a quiet glance back at him. He was passing.
They reached the base of the wall.
A few minutes later, Dylan reappeared.
“Who’s this?”
Dylan’s eyes landed on Ivan.
Ivan tensed. “I’m–I’m-”
Before he could finish, Robin answered for him. “An interesting newcomer.”
“Right, I’m-”
Ivan stammered, managing an ingratiating smile in Dylan’s direction.
He’d figured out by now that these two were a team. Robin had agreed to take him, but if this man didn’t…
He couldn’t help turning back to Robin. So… she was the only one calling the shots?

They–they had just gone over the wall?
The other side was Centerville.
