Chapter 283 False Hope, Harsh Awakening
If there had been more of them, the supplies in this building wouldn’t have lasted this long.
Actually, at the start, there were over 30 people.
But most of them couldn’t stand staying put. They left early, hoping to find something better outside.
A lot of them ended up dead.
Little by little, the group shrank, until only 16 people were left. The boy in the baseball cap had only joi them last week.
Before she could say anything, a slightly balding middle–aged map rushed forward. “Why are you the o one who came up? Where’s the rest of your team?”
Robin raised an eyebrow. “What?”
The man grew more impatient. “Aren’t you here to rescue us? I saw it–there are two armored vehicles downstairs. Why are you alone? How are your people doing your job? Your work is so sloppy that I can’t see any sincerity in it. You want me to report you to your superiors?”
“I already told you,” the boy in the cap sighed, “they’re not rescue troops. They are just passing by.”
“Shut up!” the bald man snapped, turning on him. “What do you know? You’re just a kid!”
The boy twitched his lips but said nothing more.
The bald man turned back to Robin and looked her up and down. Then his face lit up.
“Oh, I get it. You’re a scout, right? Sent here to check things out. Well, you’ve seen it now. That’s the situation. Go report back and tell your superior to send help.
“Oh, and do you have any food or water? We’ve been starving up here for a long time. If you’ve got food. bring it out.”
A middle–aged woman beside him tugged on his sleeve. “Hey, talk nicely. She came here to help us. That’s

not easy.”
“Who cares if it’s easy or not?” He yanked his arm away. “You think our lives have been easy? I’ve been starving for days. I didn’t even curse at her, that’s me being polite. What, you expect me to beg her nicely to save me? I can’t stand woman like you. Isn’t this their job?”
The others looked like they wanted to speak, but fear kept them quiet.
The boy in the cap pressed the brim of his hat down and mouthed a word. Idiot.
Robin shot him a look like he was crazy. Then she turned to the man. “Are you okay in the head?” “Huh?” The bald man froze, then exploded in anger. “What did you just say? Watch your mouth!” Robin looked at him with clear disdain. “Nothing much, Just thinking your brain might ve taken a hit.

You’re a grown man; why do you talk like that?
“Who do you think you are? Who are you talking to? You think you’re someone important? Why would you assume I came up here to help you?”
That stunned not just the bald man, but everyone else too.
They exchanged confused looks. The middle–aged woman stepped forward carefully, her eyes full of worry.
“Miss, what do you mean? Aren’t you sent by the government to rescue us?”
“The government?” Robin’s voice turned cold. “There is no government anymore. Everyone’s struggling just to survive. No one’s coming to save you.”
They had never expected that the boy in the cap was right.
No rescue was coming. She was just passing through.
The woman collapsed onto the floor, her face pale with despair. “It’s over… we’re done… no one’s coming…”
