Chapter 359 Siblings

The wind cut through their soaked clothes, chilling them straight to the bone.

The trip back was uneventful.

After a full night’s rest, every base’s members had recovered enough stamina that even the zombies they ran into along the way weren’t much of a problem. They had numbers and vehicles on their side, so breaking through never took more than a few minutes.

The whole journey took about a day before they finally rolled up to their own gates.

The moment Tyrant Base spotted Rolf and his group returning safely, cheers erupted in the distance.

Everyone knew they’d gone out for food, and not just anywhere. They’d hit the granary. That meant they had to be coming back loaded.

Rolf fed off the energy. For the moment, the sour taste of his runin with Robin faded, and he made a show of hauling out the supplies for everyone to see.

We came back with a full haul,he announced, grinning wide.

Some of you didn’t make it out on this run, but we’re family here. Good news gets shared. So I say tonight, we throw a feast. What do you think?

The crowd roared its approval. They swarmed around him, and Rolf stood at the center of it all like a king holding court. The adulation hit every note his craved.

He shot Robin a pointed look, as if to say, So what if you’re stronger than me? You’re in Tyrant Base now, and I’m the one in charge here. I don’t care how tough you are out there. In here, what I say goes.

Robin caught the look just fine. She almost laughed. The whole display was borderline childish. But if he wanted to strut, she’d let him have his two days of glory.

A cold gleam flickered through her eyes as she recalled what Martin had pulled her aside to tell her on the road back.

They wanted to use Redwood to get rid of her? That was as naive as it was absurd.

Based on what Martin described, Donald had come from the direction of Vernon Base last night, which meant he’d likely cut a deal with them too. As for why they’d also reached out to Redwood, Robin’s guess was simple. They wanted to sit back and let someone else do the dirty work, then swoop in to reap the benefits.

A lovely little fantasy. But fantasies were all they’d ever be.

Tyrant Base was swimming in celebration by evening. True to Rolf’s word, they put together what they

considered a lavish dinner.

The emphasis on lavish, however, only held within Tyrant Base’s own frame of reference.

Robin’s group didn’t even need to comment. The food they ate on a daily basis may as well have been a

gourmet spread by comparison.

Even the students, who didn’t eat quite as well, had still benefited enough from proximity that Tyrant Base’s big feast was nothing to write home about.

Tables filled the open space. Robin’s group sat together at one, but with so many people milling around, it didn’t take long for someone to notice they weren’t exactly digging in.

How come you’re barely eating?

A young woman who looked to be in her early 20s wandered over, a boy of about 15 or 16 trailing behind her. Both were gaunt and sallow, the telltale look of prolonged malnutrition. The boy pressed his lips together and said nothing while the girl spoke.
