Chapter 361 Your Mouth Stinks

Ella propped her chin on her hand. “What are you thanking us for? We should be thanking you for the offer. But honestly, don’t worry about it. It’s not that we’re afraid to get food. We just don’t have big appetites, that’s all. I mean, with how things are now, who’d turn down a meal?”
Willow relaxed a little at that. “Oh… okay then.” She gave an embarrassed smile. “I was overthinking it. Well, we won’t keep you from eating.”
“Mm.” Robin lifted her chin in a small nod.
They watched the siblings walk away, then exchanged glances around the table.
Every one of them was sharp enough to see that Willow had come over specifically to build a connection. But this was the apocalypse. Everyone was just trying to survive.
They didn’t even get to finish their meal before the next uninvited guest showed up.
“You…?” Robin raised an eyebrow, studying the man in front of her. “Can I help you?”
He looked close to 30, but the apocalypse had ground him down hard. Fine lines creased the corners of his eyes, his back was hunched, and he was rail–thin.
He let out a dry, reedy laugh, shot a glance in the direction the Newton siblings had gone, then said, “That girl. She was just over here trying to cozy up to you, wasn’t she?”
Monica wrinkled her nose in distaste. Everything about this man radiated a kind of sleazy energy. The second he’d planted himself in front of them, every instinct told her to back away.
Robin didn’t feel like engaging either. Dane glanced at her, then replied with exaggerated politeness. “How’s that any of your business?”
The man’s expression shifted. “What kind of attitude is that? I came over here out of the goodness of my heart to warn you. That boy’s got something wrong with him. Nobody in this base wants anything to do with them. The only reason she came over to talk to you is because she’s trying to latch on. You start hanging around them, whatever that boy’s got might spread to you too.”
He puffed his chest out. “I just gave you some seriously important information. You should be thanking
me.”
Robin held up a hand to stop Monica before she could react, and asked in a tone of idle curiosity, “If whatever he has were really contagious, wouldn’t his sister be the first one to catch it?”
The man sucked in a deep breath and answered with the grave authority of someone who believed eve word he was saying. “Well, normally, sure. But they’re brother and sister. A brother’s not gonna give his own sister something like that. But other people? No guarantees.”
“So why don’t you tell us, then. What exactly does her brother have?”
The man looked left, then right, then leaned in and dropped his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. That kid? He looks normal enough on the outside, right? But underneath his clothes, his skin is covered in scales. And sometimes the scales peel off. He shuddered theatrically. It’s disgusting.

Henry couldn’t help himself. “That condition existed long before the apocalypse. If I’m remembering right, it’s called ichthyo Could also be psoriasis. Neither one is contagious.”
“Who knows that for sure?” The man wore a look of exaggerated dread. “We’ve got zombies walking around now. Who’s gonna guarantee some nasty disease won’t suddenly start spreading? Take my advice. Stay far away from those two. Even if it’s not contagious, it’s still revolting.”
Monica had reached her limit. “Honestly, they seem fine to me. You, on the other hand? You’re the one who’s revolting.”
The man’s face darkened. “Excuse me? What did you just say?”
“Am I wrong?” Monica pinched her nose shut. “Your mouth stinks. And I mean that in every sense of the word. Physically and spiritually. You got anything else you wanna say? Because if not, please leave. I seriously can’t take it anymore.”
His expression went fully black. “You mouthy little… I come over here trying to do you people a favor, and you don’t know a good thing when you see it. And now you’re talking to me like that? You better believe…”
“Believe what?”
