Chapter 42 Go Home
Ella gasped. She knew Max was a scumbag, but she didn’t know he was this twisted!
“So, that’s why you said those things on purpose–to protect us…”

Ella scratched her head, a little embarrassed. “I thought you were on Max’s side.”
Mentioning him, Jessica’s eyes filled with deep hatred again. “How could I ever be on his side!
“He killed my husband. If it weren’t for protecting my daughter, if it weren’t for my husband’s last words telling me to live, I’d have killed myself and gone with him!
“But my daughter is still so little. She hasn’t really seen the world yet. To survive, I had to submit to that scumbag. Every day, I had to pretend, fake a smile, please him like some pathetic dog, just hoping he’d drop a crumb of mercy my way.
“I know what people think of me. In their eyes, I’m a lowly woman with no dignity. I don’t blame them. Sometimes, I even feel disgusting myself!”
The atmosphere turned heavy for a moment. Dane didn’t know how to comfort her, so he just kept quiet.
Ella quickly turned to look Jessica in the eyes. “No, Jessica, I misunderstood you before. But now, I really think you’re amazing!”
Jessica gave a bitter smile.
Seeing her hesitate, Ella hurried on, “I’m serious! Even though it looks like you’re closest to Max, you’re just trying to survive. You haven’t hurt anyone, and even in danger, you think about helping us. And those people? They act all high, looking down on what you do, but really, they’re Max’s laplogs. They just follow orders blindly!”
“Really?” Jessica sniffed, her eyes lighting up a little.
“Of course,” Ella said.
Her words alone didn’t feel strong enough, so she grabbed Robin’s hand and said, “Jessica, I’m telling you, Robin doesn’t save just anyone. She’s picky about people, but she’s saved you again and again. That means she already accepted you.”
Robin shot her a cold glance.
She said, “Hey, why are you dragging me into this?”
Ella giggled and stuck out her tongue at her.
Jessica pressed her lips together and looked at Robin. Robin sighed and said, “Saving you was just something I did on the way. Don’t make a big deal out of it.”
Ella took the chance to tease, “See? She’s still being stubborn!”
Robin gave a half–smile. “Looks like you’ve really gotten bold now.”

Chapter 42 Go Home

Finished
Watching the two of them talk, Jessica finally burst out laughing. Her mood felt a lot lighter.
The rest of the trip was quiet, but the tension wasn’t as thick as at the beginning.
Jessica didn’t ask where they were going. Right now, she felt like a leaf floating on water. Wherever Robin and the others went, she would follow.
But when she saw the sprawling steel fortress ahead, she was shocked for so long she couldn’t even speak.
“Come on in, Jessica. Why are you just staring?”
Ella used her fingerprint to unlock the door. Inside, Cotton and Ruby heard the sound and rushed out. But before they got close, both of them stopped and turned around, running off again.
Snowy rubbed against Robin’s shoulder with an innocent face and said sadly, “Mommy, do they not like me?”
Robin twitched the corner of her mouth and ruffled Snowy’s head.
Sweetie, do you even realize you’re the king of the forest!
Ruby and Cotton might act wild in front of Ella, but they’re basically Snowy’s menu.
“It’s okay, don’t worry. They’re just shy. Go take a walk in the back yard first. I’ll introduce you to them later.”
Jessica held her daughter and walked as if on autopilot, still in shock.
This…
She couldn’t believe it. Deep inside the zoo, there was a place that felt so safe!
Ella explained, “This place is called Shangri–La. It’s Robin’s territory. We came here later too.”
“Shangri–La…” Jessica whispered the words, her nose tingling, almost making her want to cry.
This was a true heaven.
It was like paradise on Earth.
“Robin, Ella, you’re back…“.
