Dane and Tim snapped out of it when they heard Ella. They quickly added, “Yeah, we just got a little excited. As long as you don’t mind having us, we’re not leaving. Ever.”
That actually surprised Robin. “I already gave you a chance. If you want to leave later, I won’t let you. I’ll give you one more minute to think.
“No need to think. We’re not going anywhere,” Dane said firmly..

them a long, meaningful look, then turned off the radio. “All right then. Tim and Dane, take this truck back with all the supplies. Ella and I will head into the city first and check things out.”
The three of them paused for a second, then nodded. “Got it.”
After making sure the truck had no issues and reminding each other to stay safe, they split up and drove in different directions.
The closer they got, the more zombies filled the roads. But Robin stayed calm. If the road was clear, they just ran them over. If it was blocked, she had Ella get out and flip the abandoned cars aside before driving through again.
What surprised Robin was that even when the zombies were killed by the points.

Step by step, they forced a path forward. They still hadn’t reached the city, but small shops were starting to appear along the streets. The sky was slowly getting dark.
“Robin, look ahead!” Ella suddenly called out excitedly.
Robin followed her gaze and saw a rundown motel. A broken sign hung above it, reading “Golden Crest Hotel.”
The metal shutter was halfway down. Inside, one glass door was completely shattered, and the other was half broken. Black, sticky stains covered the surface.
Even worse–a female zombie in a work uniform was stuck right on the broken door. Sharp glass had pierced through her stomach, pinning her in place.
Zombies didn’t feel pain or think clearly. She couldn’t pull herself free, so she just stayed there in that twisted position.
After over a month without food, she was nothing but skin and bones–more like a human skeleton. Flies buzzed around her, laying eggs that turned into wriggling maggots.
Sometimes, she would grab the maggots crawling on her body and stuff them into her mouth, chewing slowly like it was a treat.

Inside the hotel, a few more zombies wandered around. They all looked just as starved–thin and dried

“Let’s get out,” Robin said calmly.
“Get out?” Ella’s eyes widened. “Robin, are we staying here tonight?”
Just thinking about the zombie stuck on the door made her uncasy.
“Yes.”
Robin nodded and stepped out of the car. “These zombies are starving. That means not many people come here. No people means safer. And about fifty yards ahead, there’s a fork in the road. I don’t want Dane and Tim to miss us.”
Ella didn’t argue anymore. She held back her disgust and followed.
The zombies inside, which had been barely moving, suddenly lifted their heads. They smelled fresh flesh. At the same time, they all turned, their gray–white eyes locking onto Robin and Ella.
Dim light. Empty street. Broken hotel.
The whole scene felt eerie.
Robin glanced at Ella and lowered her voice. “Let’s finish this quickly.”
Ella nodded. They moved forward quietly. Just as the zombies confirmed their prey and rushed at them, the two of them exploded into action.
In seconds, they used their shovels to kill them with minimal noise.
