Just like Robin expected, once they reached the second floor, most of that awful smell faded away.
The floor was covered in soft carpet. But in this situation, even that soft feeling made it seem disgusting.
Ella forced herself to stay calm. Her guard was fully up.
Luckily, there didn’t seem to be any zombies upstairs. But the silence was terrifying.
Robin stopped in front of a room at the corner of the stairs.
This room looked different from the others. There was no number on the door. Ella thought for a second, then realized, “This must be the owner’s room, right?”
The hotel was in the middle of nowhere. It would be a hassle to travel back and forth every day, so it made sense for the owner to live here.
Robin tried the doorknob. It was locked. “Kick it open.”
Ella stepped back. Just as she lifted her leg to kick, the door suddenly cracked open.
“Hey!”
Ella almost lost her balance, stopping herself just in time.
She stared at the man behind the door in shock, then glanced at Robin.
There’s actually a living person in this place?
“Who are you?” the man asked warily.
He looked terrible. Skinny, pale, and weak. His hair had grown so long that it covered his eyes, making him look gloomy.
“Who are you?” Ella shot back.
The man forced a smile. “I’m the owner here!”
*Owner…”
Before Ella could say more, the man quickly asked again, “How did you get up here? Didn’t the zombies downstairs chase you?”
“We already killed them,” Ella said. “We were just passing by and thought we’d stay here for the night.”
The owner’s eyes widened. “You mean all the zombies downstairs are dead?”
Ella nodded. “Yeah.”
“That’s amazing! You’re heroes, you saved me!”

He got so excited that he pulled the door wide open and started crying. “Oh my God, finally someone came! I’ve been waiting for so long! I was going crazy, stuck in this room! I thought about leaving before, but I didn’t even make it past the stairs. There were those monsters everywhere!
“I don’t understand… how did the world turn into this? We were living normal lives, but why did this suddenly happen?
“My wife is dead. My child is dead. I’m the only one left… I don’t even know why I’m still alive… There’s no power, no internet. My phone doesn’t work. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person left in the world… Thank God… I finally see other people… Maybe there’s still hope…”
The grown man covered his face and cried. The scene felt awkward.
Ella glanced at Robin, not knowing what to say.
“Uh… Maybe calm down a bit first?” she said carefully. “Oh, right… I should calm down.” The owner wiped his tears. “I got too emotional seeing you. Sorry for making a scene.”
