Chapter 99 A Name from the Past
“Xane?!”
The moment she heard that name, Robin stiffened. A flash of raw hatred crossed her eyes.
Xane? What a coincidence.
I’d never expect to run into him here.
“Oh, Mr. Clark.”
Robin stepped forward with a faint smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Xane froze for a second, then looked at her with suspicion. “You know me?”
“Of course.”
Robin gave a small nod.
Back in her previous life, at Redwood Military Base, his name had been everywhere.
But what she said out loud was different. “I’m from around here. Your reputation? I’ve known it for a long time.”
Who doesn’t like a little praise?
Especially when it comes from a beautiful woman.
Xane’s mood lifted right away. “Looks like you’ve got good taste. So, have you thought about what
said?
Escort me to the base, and I’ll make sure you’re taken care of. Especially you…”
He licked his lips, greed flashing in his eyes. “I can make an exception and keep you close. Stick with and you’ll live well.”
Robin curled her lips into a faint smile. “I’ll think about it.”
“What’s there to think about-”
He frowned, annoyed that she didn’t agree right away.
But Robin had already turned to Martin. “Cap–Martin. Can we talk for a minute? In private?”
Martin felt a bit puzzled. From the start, he had noticed something strange about the way she looked him.
Like they had known each other before.
But he was sure of one thing–before today, they had never met.
He nodded. “Alright.”

The two of them walked off to the side. Xane tried to follow, but Tim stepped in front of him. “Mr. Clark,

maybe we shouldn’t interrupt.”
Xane shot him an annoyed look. “Like I care.”
In a quiet corner not far away, Martin and Robin stopped.

“I’m actually a little confused,” Martin said, looking at her. “Young lady, what exactly do you want from me? And we’ve never met before, right?”
Robin took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down. “Are you sure you want to go to that military base?”
The question came out of nowhere. Martin frowned. “I don’t understand why you’re asking that.”
Robin’s voice turned serious. “Xane is bad news. Even if you escort him to the base, he won’t let you off easily.”
“I know what kind of person Xane is,” Martin replied. “But I don’t see what this has to do with you. We’ve never met. You suddenly come to me and say all this… it’s hard not to be suspicious.”
“We haven’t met before,” Robin admitted.
Seeing the caution on his face, she realized she had been too impulsive.
She hadn’t expected to run into her former team leader after so long. The emotions hit her all at once, and she lost control for a moment.
Robin paused, then spoke quickly, making it sound natural.
“But I know what Xane is like. He’s a complete monster! I had a friend who offended him before the outbreak. It ended terribly.
“Someone like him doesn’t deserve your help, Martin. You’re a soldier. Why protect a man like that? Why not just let him face what’s coming? Are you really going to help someone like him do more harm?”
Hearing how worked up she was, Martin’s suspicion eased a little.
He let out a quiet sigh. “Ms. Neel, I understand what you’re saying. But I’m a soldier. Orders are orders. Escorting Xane to the base is my mission. Following orders is my duty.”
“But even if you help him, someone like him will only bring you harm!” Robin clenched her fists.
