“I do. I hate him, and I have no desire to be forced back into a life with him. He isn’t a ‘good‘ person. He’s domineering, possessive, and arrogant. He wants to control everything and constantly ignores my wishes to follow his own path.”

Lindsey’s expression softened slightly, thinking her granddaughter had seen reason. But then, Tatiana’s tone

shifted.

“But he is Ann and Hubert’s father.”

“I don’t want them to lose their father forever. I don’t want them to live the rest of their lives in the shadow of knowing their father died while trying to save their mother.”

“He might not be a good husband, but he is a good father to Ann and Hubert.”

Lindsey countered immediately, “They’ve already lost their father. They cannot afford to lose their mother too. You need to weigh the risks; you should understand what’s more important.”

The argument didn’t move Lindsey. If anything, it gave her a more unassailable reason to keep Tatiana home. A long silence stretched between them in the hospital room.

Tatiana’s hands clenched into fists, loosened, and clenched again. Finally, she found her voice.

“Grandmother. Regardless of all that… I want to go.”

“You…”

Tatiana closed her eyes, unable to lie to herself any longer.

“I want to save him. I hate him, but I want him to live. If he dies, I will be in agony. Right here.” She pointed to her chest. “It feels heavy, unbearable. Thinking about him dying… I’ve realized that this heartache is far worse than any migraine.”

Lindsey stared at her, speechless. All the logic in the world couldn’t overcome that one simple truth: she wanted to go.

Lindsey’s eyes welled with tears. She reached out and pulled Tatiana into an embrace.

“If you absolutely must go, you had better remember that promise.”

Leaning against her grandmother’s shoulder, Tatiana gave a heavy nod. “I will.”

With her grandmother’s consent secured, the rest of the pieces began to fall into place. She called for Ann and Hubert. The two little ones were sharp; they already knew what their mommy was going to say. They clung to her from both sides, their youthful voices thick with attachment.

During her preparations, Ben contacted her. He had originally intended to talk her out of going back, but after seeing the level of her planning, he fell silent. Eventually, he consulted his superiors. They proposed a collaboration.

With official support, the scale of the mission escalated. They held secret negotiations, but before the meetings even began, Tatiana had already drawn a detailed topographical map based on her extraordinary memory. The officials were stunned by her capability.

With the map in hand, they had a much better chance. They began deploying a strategy around it, though the biggest hurdle remained communication.

“The entire region is a dead zone due to magnetic interference. If the team splits up, we’ll be picked off one by one. But if we stay grouped, we’re too easy to spot.”

“We tried to bypass the interference, but we can’t solve it in the short term. We’ll have to use primitive methods–leaving physical markers.”

Tatiana shook her head. “No, those are too easily discovered.” She suddenly recalled the badges those men wore. “Wait… they have electronic devices that work. That means the interference is likely targeted or they have a bypass. We need to crack it.”

But how? A technical expert couldn’t just waltz in; a full military–scale operation would be required to protect them.

Tatiana offered a solution. “Provide me with an expert. I will guarantee their safety, get them in quickly, and get them out.”

“The miasma only clears for a very short window each day. It’s impossible to move that fast, even for the most experienced-”
