An ordinary dinner meant nothing compared to a family empire. Anyone else would have picked the empire and moved on.

But Norman was stuck. He didn’t want to choose. He wanted the power, and he wanted the girl.

“The time.”

“Eight o’clock.”

“Fine. Wait for my call.”

James was stunned. Even after everything, Norman still couldn’t get his priorities straight. All for one woman. Suddenly, James felt like that woman was a problem that needed to be removed. He kept that thought buried deep.

When Norman got to the restaurant, he spotted Tammy immediately.

She was a magnet for every eye in the place. He even saw a guy from the next table, egged on by his friends, walk up to her and start talking.

“Miss, could we meet? Maybe exchange numbers?”

Tammy was clearly annoyed, but she kept it civil. “No. I don’t have a phone.”

Her phone was sitting right there on the table.

The guy knew she was blowing him off, but he didn’t care. “I’m a manager at a big firm. I make thirty thousand a month. I’ve got two houses and a car, all paid for. I’m in great shape, I hit the gym, I play ball. I’ve got plenty to offer.”

He was full of himself, talking a mile a minute to show off, certain she would cave.

Tammy’s patience was gone. She was about to snap when a shadow fell between them.

“Are you bothering my wife?”

Norman was smiling, but his eyes were ice cold. There was a lethal edge to him, the kind that only comes from years of violence. It was enough to make anyone’s skin crawl.

The corporate guy looked into those eyes for three seconds and folded. He backed off, muttering, “Whatever. Not worth fighting some broke loser.”

Apparently, Norman’s plain clothes made him a nobody in that guy’s book. Norman watched him walk away, his gaze darkening.

Tammy remembered why they were there. She cleared her throat and leaned forward, letting her dress shift just enough.

“What took you so long?”

Norman’s eyes dropped for a split second before he picked up his glass. “Traffic. I’ll drink to make up for it.”

He downed the wine without a word.

Round one was a draw.

Tammy wasn’t finished. She licked a bit of sauce off her lip and looked at him. “Do you know what today is?”

Norman watched her for a second. His grip on his fork tightened. He knew exactly what she was playing at. It was obvious.

“What day is it?”

“It’s your birthday.”

“I’m not…”

He stopped. He remembered the date on his fake ID, the birthday for Bovine. He had never given a damn about that identity, but she had memorized it and planned this whole thing.

A surge of warmth flooded his heart.

He liked her clumsy attempt at flirting, so he played along. “So we’re celebrating me tonight?”

Tammy changed her move. Under the table, she kicked off a heel and rubbed her foot against his leg. “Yeah. I did all this for you. Are you happy?”

Norman didn’t flinch. Before she could do anything else, his hand shot under the table and clamped around her ankle.

“I’m very happy.” He rubbed his thumb against her bone. “But the floor is dirty. Keep your shoes on.”

Tammy tried to pull away, but he held on. His grip was firm.

Why is his hand so hot?

The main course arrived, and he let go to cut his steak like nothing had happened. Tammy tried to catch her breath.

Norman glanced at her and finally laughed. “If you’re going to start something, you’d better be ready to finish it.”
