Chapter 218 Not the Girl in His Plans

Arden paused and crouched down to admire a bloom–soft blue, delicate. Just then, someone called her name. She looked up. “Ruby?”
Ruby waved and walked over.
“I had to come,” she said. “It’s Celine’s big night.”
“I thought you might not,” Arden said. “Celine asked Ares yesterday, and he said he wasn’t sure if you’d be here.”
Ruby’s expression flickered, then settled again. “Yeah, well… I don’t know him that well anyway.”
Arden didn’t press. She wasn’t sure what was going on between them, and frankly, it wasn’t her business.
“Celine was just talking about you last night,” she said instead. “She’s gonna be thrilled you’re here.”
Ruby smiled, glancing around. “No Mr. Vale with you?”
“What?” Arden blinked. “Why would he be with me?”
Ruby’s smile turned sly. “Just a hunch. Feels like he might be into you.”
What’s the point? We are getting divorced. If it meant anything, it would’ve meant something three years ago.
Arden laughed. “You’ve got that all wrong.”
They were still teasing when Ruby’s mood suddenly shifted. “Uh–oh,” she muttered, eyes narrowing. “Look who just showed up.”
“Who?” Arden followed her gaze.
Martin and Vivienne, hanging off his arm.
Martin looked every bit the charming gentleman in a sleek gray suit and tie. Vivienne clung to him with a bright, polished smile.
But Martin’s eyes… cold, calculating. Arden’s skin crawled just seeing him.
“You don’t like them either?” she asked Ruby.
Ruby gave a dry smile. “Let’s just say I’ve heard enough. Martin’s reputation isn’t exactly stellar. And Vivienne? We all saw what she tried to pull with you.”
She added quietly, “Ares said Martin had a hand in what happened at Harold’s birthday party. I don’t need more reasons to dislike him.”
Arden nodded. “She was canceled once. But now she’s got serious backing–she just wrapped a big–budget period drama and people love it. She’s trending again.”
“Besides Mr. Vale, who has that kind of power?” Ruby asked.

Fini:
Arden just shook her head. “I have no idea.”
At the gate, Celine spotted Martin and Vivienne and frowned. She’d made it very clear–no invitation f the Ash family.
Martin acted like he didn’t notice her reaction. “Celine, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten me? You used to chase after me calling my name back in the day.”
Celine didn’t bother hiding her disgust. “That was a long time ago. How did you even get an invite? I tol them not to send you one.”
Martin chuckled smoothly. “C’mon, Celine. The Ash and Vale families go way back. How could we miss your big day?”
Vivienne smiled sweetly. “We just wanted to wish you a happy birthday.”
Celine didn’t respond. Sure, the Vales had invited all the old families, and the Ashes were technically stil one of them. She couldn’t exactly turn them away.
Still, she wasn’t happy.
Martin, meanwhile, let his eyes sweep down her figure with a barely hidden hunger.
