“You look absolutely gorgeous tonight. You’re totally gonna steal Ares‘ heart.”

Celine was all smiles, arms looped with Arden as she turned to Ruby. “Ruby, how’s it going between you and Ares?”
Even Arden, who usually kept her curiosity in check, perked up. She’d always thought Ruby and Ares ma a striking pair–was there actually something going on?
Ruby gave a dry chuckle.
“Not much to report. The guy’s built like steel, emotionally and physically. Doesn’t matter how hard you try to get close, he’s always cold. I’m tired. Thinking of throwing in the towel.”
She nudged a pebble along the stone path with her heel, eyes fixed on the Vale estate ahead–done up lik a fairy tale castle.
“What?” Celine looked stunned. “You’re telling me you’ve been chasing Ares all these years and he’s just… zen–mode cold the whole time?”
“Yep. Over a decade now. I’m twenty–five already. If he were ice, he’d have melted by now. But nope. Still Ares.”
Arden blinked. Ruby? Tall, stunning, wild, and confident Ruby? The girl every woman admired? She’d been chasing someone for ten years?
“You really like him that much?”
Ruby didn’t hesitate. “Four years of keeping it to myself. Seven more of putting it out there. Still zero progress.”
She gave a self–deprecating shrug. “Maybe I’m just not his type. Or maybe he doesn’t have one.”
Celine’s jaw dropped. “No way. Wait, wait–is he into guys?”
Ruby nodded casually. “That’d explain a lot.”
Celine tapped her chin, thinking hard, then blurted, “Okay, hear me out. Seduction. Just test the waters. You’ve got the face, the body–any red–blooded man would cave. Ares is still a man, right?”
Ruby sighed. “Tried that. Didn’t work. The man literally helped me put my clothes back on
Both Arden and Celine stared at her, speechless.
“I’m serious,” Ruby added. “Right after I graduated college, I was convinced no man could stay that calen. I tried. He didn’t even flinch Just buttoned me back up, deadpan, told me to quit fooling around
Celine turned to Arden, eyes wide. Arden was just as sturned.
Kuby, meanwhile, nodded solemnly like she was recounting a war story.

“Girl, I swear, my brother and Ares are both blind,” Celine huffed. “You’re stunning tonight. Screw Ares. With all the trust fund guys from Avalen, Eloria, Zevia, and Deepvale here tonight, you’ve got options. If he can’t appreciate you, let’s upgrade.”
Ruby cracked a laugh. “You know what? That sounds pretty good.”
Celine whipped out her phone. “Okay, I’m starting a group chat for us three.”
“Why?” Arden asked.
“Because we’re hot. And from now on, all gossip about my brother, Ares, or Cassian goes in the group. We’ll do brunch, shopping–forget the guys, we’re our own main characters.”
Ruby was into it. Arden smiled too–this was the kind of girl gang she hadn’t known she needed.
The three of them walked along the rose–lined path, each with her own style of beauty. They were impossible to miss–and sure enough, they were being watched.
Dorian and Ares were standing just a few yards away, hidden only by a rose–laden trellis.
Dorian elbowed Ares. “Did you hear that? Ruby’s done chasing you.”
Ares‘ gaze didn’t waver from her. “Good. About time.”
Dorian’s phone buzzed. He checked the screen–it was Celine.
Celine sent a message, “Martin and Vivienne just showed up. Don’t tell me you invited them?”
