Chapter 221 What They Choose to See

That waist was slim, her legs long and pale. Damn.

Ares lifted his head and immediately spotted Ruby. She was wearing a black, kneelength dress. Her makeup was still bold to the point of excess, red lips, matching red earrings. Her hair fell loose over her shoulders. The dress was daring, off the shoulders and cut low at the chest. Ruby had a great figure, the curves obvious without trying.

Ares’s gaze skimmed her chest for a split second, and his eyes cooled.

Ruby, however, didn’t look at him at all. After all these years of losing to him, she was tired too. A man who couldn’t be stirred was no longer worth stirring.

No matter how much she liked him, how much she loved him, if he never responded, then all these years she’d just been making a fool of herself.

Her family had started pressuring her to marry, making it very clear. If she couldn’t find someone she liked, they would choose a match for her.

Maybe tonight was a chance.

With so many heirs from prominent families here, she didn’t have to keep throwing herself at Ares, did

she?

She leaned casually against the railing, smiling without a care, looking down at the people in the living room. Ares stood out easily. His presence was overwhelming, his hair cropped short. Years in the military had given him a steadiness and edge most rich heirs simply didn’t have.

He was tall, nearly sixfootthree, impossible to miss. Of course Ruby noticed him right away.

But this time, the look she gave him wasn’t burning, wasn’t longing.

She only glanced at him briefly, gathered her emotions, and shifted her attention elsewhere.

Barry saw Ruby and was clearly excited. When her eyes passed over him, he even raised a hand to wave, unable to stop himself from saying, Ruby looks incredible tonight.

Ares glanced at him, then walked toward the sofa in the hall without saying a word,

Cassian clicked his tongue and reminded Barry, Doesn’t matter how good she looks, she’s not for you. Take the hint and give it up.

Dorian, meanwhile, spotted Arden instantly.

She was wearing a red dress.

All four women were dressed in bodyhugging gowns, and Arden was no exception. Her dress was similar to Ruby’s, but hers was a mermaid cut that emphasized her figure even more, like it had been molded to her body.

Her waist was cinched tight, the fullness at her chest subtly revealed, every movement suggesting

temptation. Her slightly wavy hair cascaded down one side of her waist. Her profile looked soft and sweet.. her eyes clear and bright, innocent yet open.

That mix of pure and seductive hit hard. He had never seen her dressed this boldly. Bold enough to make his chest tighten.

And that kind of view should belong to him alone. What right did these entitled heirs have to look?

Dorian’s eyes darkened as they paused at her collarbone. His expression sank immediately, and he called Lucien. Get Arden a shawl.

Lucien had noticed Arden’s outfit too. He let out an ahand said, Mr. Vale, where am I supposed to find a shawl right now? Why don’t you just call her and tell her to go back upstairs and grab one?

So now you’re giving me instructions?Dorian said coolly.

Lucien went quiet. No, Mr. Vale.

Forget it. I’ll handle it myself.” Dorian hung up, opened Arden’s chat, and typed, “Ask Celine for a shawl and put it on.”

Arden’s phone buzzed. She looked down, saw the message, and replied, I’m not cold.

Dorian answered, “You are. Put it on.

There was a natural arrogance to this man. She had noticed him the moment he stepped into the living room. Now she looked straight at him, a streak of defiance in her eyes, and replied, I’m not putting one

on.

She clearly saw the displeasure on his face.

Arden didn’t care.

So what if she dressed nicely? Since when was that his business?

Their eyes met. Dorian gave her a crooked, almost dangerous smile, then turned and started up the stairs.

Celine had been watching both Dorian and Ares closely. Seeing the way their faces darkened, brows pressed low, she quickly clapped her hands. Look at Dorian and Ares. That’s jealousy, clear as day. They just don’t want you dressed so well and drawing attention.

Ruby didn’t think so. Ares getting jealous? That would be a first.

Arden didn’t see it either. I think your brother’s just mad. He told me to put on a shawl.

Don’t,Celine said immediately. You look amazing.”

Then she asked, Arden, are you cold at all? If you are, I can go get you something.

No,” Arden said. I think this dress is really pretty. It suits me.

Ruby nodded. It does.
