Chapter 225 The Impostor’s Real Face

The room was filled with young heirs from legacy families, all well–bred and powerful in their own right- and all of them were now shaking their heads in disdain.
Cassian was the first to speak. “I’ve never seen her before,” he said, eyeing Lacey coldly. “But since she came in with Alice, I’m guessing she’s from the Wren family? She kinda looks like Joshua, doesn’t she?”
Theo added, voice low and pointed, “Joshua? The guy who ditched his old–money wife for a mistress and kept the lovechild hidden all these years? That circus?”
He gave Lacey a look that barely hid his contempt.
“Yeah, I remember the girl’s name. Lacey, wasn’t it?”
Everyone in the room caught the name like a bad scent. In elite circles, mistresses and their kids were the stuff of nightmares–scandals, lawsuits, inheritance fights. Nothing poisoned a family legacy faster.
Theo’s voice turned cutting. “So, you’re Lacey?”
He said it like a slur.
He—and the rest of the room–weren’t even subtle about their disgust. In families like theirs, bastards weren’t just outsiders. They were problems.
Sure, everyone knew Dorian didn’t like Arden, but Arden came from a respectable family. Her reputation was clean, her background solid. She was Caleb’s sister. That meant something.
But this girl?
She screamed trouble.
Lacey felt exposed, like someone had yanked the curtain open and shoved her under a spotlight. She turned to Dorian, her eyes silently pleading–say something. One word from him, and everything would shift. One word, and she wouldn’t be standing alone.
But he didn’t even glance at her. Didn’t speak. Didn’t blink. She was on her own.
Lacey tried to gather what was left of her pride. Her voice wavered. “My mom… she had no choice. She was desperate-”
Alice cut her off with a voice like ice.
“Desperate? She was eager. She threw herself into an affair like it was her only job. And now what–you show up, hoping to cash in on the drama?”
Alice gave a slow, mocking smile.
“Face it. You’re the product of an affair. At least learn to keep a low profile. But here you are–loud, pathetic, and desperate to be seen.”
She took a step closer.

“And save your tears. Who are you crying for, huh? Me? Want to act like I bullied you again so you can go weep in public and play the victim?”
Alice’s voice sharpened with every word.
If there was one thing she hated more than anything, it was the “poor little me” act Lacey was so good at. One whimper and the world bent over backward.
Caleb, who’d stayed silent until now, finally snapped.
“What are you crying for?” he said, voice cold. “Nobody even touched you.”
Then he added, “Let me guess–you’re into Dorian. Think you’re the one? You should know that he can’t stand women who cry in front of him.”
Lacey’s throat tightened. Her eyes were glassy, tears brimming and ready to fall–but now she was too scared to let them.
She turned again to Dorian–please–but all she saw was irritation. His brow twitched; his patience was
gone.
“Loud.” he muttered.
That was all he said. Alice grabbed Lacey by the wrist.
“Sorry about the mess,” she said to the others. “Family business. Hope it didn’t ruin your appetites.”
She yanked Lacey toward the exit. But Lacey dug her heels in.
She wasn’t done.
She pulled out her last card, turned to Dorian, eyes glistening with staged innocence.
“Mr. Vale… don’t you remember me?” she whispered. “I’m the girl who saved you. Back in Northmere.”
If he acknowledged that–just that–everything would change. But Dorian finally looked up. Not at her–at Alice.
“Alice,” he said, tone flat. “Your sister’s got quite the imagination. If she wants to cozy up to the Vale family, this is the worst way to do it.”
He tilted his head, cool and collected.
“I don’t need saving. I travel with bodyguards. What could a stranger possibly do for me?”
Lacey’s face crumpled. Vivienne had sworn he still cared for the girl who once rescued him in Northmere. But this man… was ice.
Alice seized the moment.
“Apologies, Mr. Vale. She’s got stars in her eyes and no sense in her head. She thinks marrying rich will solve all her problems. Ignore her–I’ll get her out.”

Lacey’s voice shook.
“Mr. Vale, in Northmere-“.
His tone turned lethal. “Shut up.”
His gaze sliced through her. “You dare bring up Northmere again? You’re not even trying to make the lie believable. One more word–and I’ll have your tongue cut out.”
