Kade glanced at his boss.

Dorian was burning with fever, barely conscious, but his arm–veins bulging–was locked tight around Colton’s wrist.
Kade stayed silent. Lucien quickly drove toward Cloudwind Court. It was already 11 p.m., but Arden was
still awake.
Lucien called her first. Arden picked up. “Lucien? It’s late. What’s going on?”
Lucien spoke softly, “Mrs. Vale.”
Arden immediately corrected him, “Lucien, Dorian and I are divorced. Just call me Arden.”
Lucien continued, “He’s badly injured. His wound’s infected, fever’s spiked, he’s unconscious and keeps calling your name. Can you come see him?”
Arden replied calmly, “Lucien, if he’s sick you should call a doctor, not me. I’m not medically trained.”
Lucien lowered his voice, “Arden, I don’t even know if he’ll make it through the night. The wound tore open earlier tonight at dinner. He lost a lot of blood. He’s still getting transfusions. He only went to the office today because he wanted to see you. Please… can you come to Silverbay Villa?”
Arden didn’t believe it. That man had lied to her too many times.
“Lucien, I have work tomorrow. I’m going to bed. Please call his doctor.”
She hung up. Lying in bed, her thoughts drifted to Dorian’s pale face, the way he looked thinner, weaker than before.
He was powerful. Surrounded by bodyguards–Lucien, Colton, Kade, and plenty of people hidden in the shadows. What could possibly happen to him?
Still, the sleep wouldn’t come.
She had to admit it–Dorian had been away for over six months, and she’d been doing fine. She liked this kind of ordinary, peaceful life.
But the moment he returned, that peace shattered. Whenever he showed up, it was like chaos followed.
Not long after, her doorbell rang. She walked to the door and asked, “Who is it?”
“Arden, it’s me. Lucien.”
Arden pressed her lips together. “Go home, Lucien. I’m not going to see him.”
Lucien, desperate, called Celine and made it sound even worse. “Mr. Vale was shot and stabbed. He might not make it. Please get to Silverbay Villa now.”
Celine froze.

She raced over, panicked.
When she saw her brother’s pale, worn face, she burst into tears and threw herself onto him.
Then she noticed Dorian’s hand tightly gripping Colton’s wrist.
Tears still rolling down her cheeks, she sniffled, “What are you two doing? Don’t tell me my brother’s in love with you, Colton?”
Colton panicked, “No, no! Miss, I swear! Boss thinks I’m Arden!”
Celine sobbed harder. “He can’t die. He can’t die.”
Colton didn’t say a word. Not long after, Arden’s phone rang again.
She picked up. The first thing she heard was Celine sobbing, “Arden…”
Arden sat up, alarmed. “Celine, what’s wrong?”
Celine cried harder, “Arden, my brother’s dying. He’s hallucinating. He thinks Colton is you and won’t let go of his hand. Can you please come see him?”
Arden froze. She held her breath. “Celine… what did you just say?”
“My brother,” Celine wept, “he’s bleeding so much. He got shot and stabbed. Please, Arden, just come see him one last time.”
“Where is he? Why was he shot?”
Celine sniffled, “I don’t know. He didn’t tell me. Please, Arden. This might be the last chance.”
Arden heard how badly she was crying and tried to calm her, “I’ll come right now. Your brother’s strong, he’ll pull through.”
She jumped out of bed, slipped into shoes. “Where is he? At the estate?”
“At Silverbay Villa.”
“Okay. I’m coming.”
“Lucien’s downstairs. Take his car.”
“Got it.”
Arden grabbed a coat and headed out. The familiar Maybach was parked outside, the one Dorian usually took. Lucien’s eyes lit up the moment he saw her. He rushed over. “Ar… Arden.”
