Cassian let out a sharp laugh. “You really are something. Took a perfectly good girl like Arden and ruined her. Hell, you married her in secret and still touched her. No wonder Caleb doesn’t want anything to do with you.”

“Yeah.” Dorian admitted it.

Cassian didn’t even know what to say next.

Just then, his phone rang. It was his dad. He held the phone away from his ear and groaned, “Yeah, yeah, I get it. Marriage again. You want me to interview every daughter of Avalen’s elite like I’m hosting a game show? I’m only twenty–six! Can I live a little before settling down? What’s the rush?”

He hung up, clearly annoyed. “Dorian, my dad says I need to head back. Says it’s urgent. Where’s Lucien?”

“He’s right behind you.”

Cassian was speechless. Dorian asked, “Your dad pushing you to get married?”

Cassian pulled out a cigarette and laughed bitterly. “Yeah. He’s a dictator. Always has been. I was born for a strategic marriage. You watch, he’s gonna pick out some heiress that benefits the Fox family.”

“With all the women you’ve been with, not one you actually liked?”

Cassian was known for being a player.

In their world of power and prestige, his family gave him everything–status, privilege, honor. In return, he had to play his part.

Love didn’t belong in the world of arranged marriages. It was always business.

He took a long drag. The light in his eyes was completely gone. “Dorian, sometimes I envy you. You wanted to get married, you did. Wanted to get divorced, you did. You got to choose. I don’t. I’ll marry whoever they pick, live the rest of my life going through the motions.”

He got out of the car and went to help Dorian. Lucien rushed over to assist.

Cassian patted his shoulder. “Take care of your boss.”

“Got it, Mr. Fox.”

Cassian left. Lucien helped Dorian into the car. The phone rang again. Lucien glanced at it–Felix.

He answered. Felix practically roared, “Where’s Dorian? Put him on.”

Lucien handed over the phone.

Dorian’s voice was low and cold. “Talk.”

“Mr. Vale, I told you to stay home and rest. Wait for us to check your wound. But no, you had to go out and pop your stitches. Get back here. Now.”

“You rushing off to see Arden? Figures.” Felix was fuming. “Keep this up and you’ll end up dead, and the girl’ll be walking down the aisle with someone else while you rot.”

Dorian’s voice dropped, “Shut up.”

“For a woman? Really? You’re bleeding out, and has she even asked how you’re doing? Does she even know?”

Dorian didn’t respond to the rant. “Alright. Chill out. I’m coming back.”

He hung up and glanced at Lucien. Lucien spoke quickly, “Felix kept asking. I had to tell him the truth.”

Dorian looked one last time at the orange light in the sixth–floor window. “Let’s go.”

Dorian’s condition was critical. It was a miracle they had stabilized him the first time.

Out in the mountains, he’d nearly frozen to death. The stitches barely held, and now they’d torn open again.

Felix smelled the alcohol on him and nearly exploded. “You serious right now? Drinking while bleeding out?”

“Quit yelling. Just fix it.” He had lost a lot of blood. Not long after lying down, he passed out cold.

The bullet wound and the stab wound were close together, and with the cold slowing recovery, his injuries

were a mess.

The wound was raw, torn open again. Felix cursed under his breath and got ready to stitch him up again.

Torn stitches meant inflammation, and inflammation meant fever. It didn’t take long before Dorian was burning up.

Delirious, his mind drifted to Arden.

He kept calling her name in a hoarse whisper.

Lucien tried to get him to drink water. Dorian suddenly grabbed his arm and muttered, “Arden, don’t go…”
