Chapter 269 Too Hot to Hold

Arden went speechless.

She tried pulling her hand back, but couldn’t.

Colton finally let go, nearly in tears. “Arden, Mr. Vale still listens to you. Maybe you showing up is all it took to break the fever.”

He looked like he was ready to drop to his knees in gratitude.

But Arden didn’t think so.

Maybe Dorian was just dreaming about how she once forced him into marriage, still bitter even in his sleep.

And that cup of coffee she’d dumped on him before he left the country? A man like him, used to being treated like royalty, probably had never been humiliated like that. He had to be holding a grudge. Now he was clinging to her in his sleep–probably plotting revenge.

Arden pressed her lips together.

She tried to pull away again, but his grip only tightened. He tugged her hand up to his face and rubbed his cheek against it. “Don’t go,” he murmured.

Celine blinked in disbelief. “Arden, what’s he doing? You think he’s dreaming about that coffee and planning payback?”

Arden nodded. “Has to be.”

“What if he wakes up and sees you sitting here? You think he’ll hit you?”

Arden hesitated. “Would he hit someone?”

Celine thought about it seriously. “Well, he’s never hit me.”

Arden sighed.

Felix came in after replacing the IV and blood packs. He held out a bunch of pills. “Celine, I’ll need you to give him these later.”

“Okay. Felix… he’s not gonna die, right?”

Felix glanced at Dorian’s hand, still clinging to Arden’s. “Hard to say. Tonight’s crucial. Someone has to be with him the whole time–cold compress, water, and constant monitoring. If his fever breaks by morning, he lives.”

Celine looked at the bloodied mess around his left abdomen. “But why was he shot? Ardellia doesn’t allow guns, and even in Soutaria where it’s legal–he wasn’t on some crazy mission. He was just traveling for business, and he had a team of bodyguards. How did he get stabbed and shot?”

Felix gave Arden a brief glance, then told her, “Ask Dorian yourself when he wakes up.”

He set the pills down. “Make sure he takes them on time. If anything changes, shout for me–I’ll be in the living room.”

“Okay.”

Celine looked apologetically at Arden. “Sorry, Arden. Do you wanna nap a bit? I can sit with him for now. You’ve got work tomorrow.”

Arden smiled. “It’s fine. I’ll take the day off. Let’s focus on getting the meds in him first.”

Kade entered with a bowl of warm water. Celine quickly stepped aside. “Kade, can you help him take the pills?”

“Sure.”

Kade glanced at Celine. Her eyes were red, looking like a doll on the verge of crying. He was tall and strong, but his face was blank, emotionless.

He walked over to the bed, leaned down, and lowered his voice. “Boss. Time to take your meds.”

He took the pills and slipped them into Dorian’s mouth, then held the bowl up to help him drink.

Dorian spit everything right back out.

Kade picked up the pills, tried again. “Come on, boss. You need these.”

Spit out again.

Kade stood up, at a loss. He looked at Arden. “Miss Wynn… maybe you should try. He won’t take anything from me.”

The boss is back for her. Maybe she’s the only one he’ll actually work with.

Arden looked horrified. “He won’t take it from me either. Let Celine try.”

Kade pressed his lips together and handed the pills to Celine. “You give it a shot.”

Celine stepped up to the bed. “Dorian, please. Take these. You’ve got to break the fever.”

But again, he spit the pills right out. She tried several times. Same result. In frustration, she turned to Arden. “Can you try?”

Arden tried. No luck.

Celine had no choice but to shout for Felix. “Felix! He won’t take anything!”

“Then we’ll have to force it down.”

Felix wasn’t being dramatic–if Dorian didn’t take his meds, the fever wouldn’t break, and he’d die.
