Colton protested, “Kade, why don’t you do it?”

“He was just holding your hand. He won’t push you away. Besides, we’re trying to save him here.”

Celine stepped forward. She and Arden had once been close. Arden had been her sister–in–law. Tears welled up in her eyes. “Arden, please. Help my brother.”

Felix came back in, checked the thermometer. “104.8. If he doesn’t take something now, he won’t make it.”

Everyone turned to Arden.

She remembered when she’d been drugged back in Eloria, and Dorian had been the one to save her.

She owed him.

She looked at him lying there, pale and weak, and finally lowered her eyes. “Fine. But you all need to leave.”

They filed out immediately.

Now it was just Arden and Dorian.

She looked at him, whispering, “I’m doing this because of what you did for me back in Eloria. And for Eugenia. I don’t want her burying her grandson. This is me repaying a debt. After this, we’re done. Completely.”

She picked up the bowl, took a sip, leaned down, and pressed her mouth to his.

Their skin touched. But Arden felt nothing–no spark, no heartbeat.

She thought he might’ve woken up. She fed him the first sip. He swallowed.

She whispered, “Dorian, are you awake?”

He didn’t answer. Still unconscious. She continued feeding him. Almost done.

Just as she was pulling away, he bit her lip.

She gasped, eyes wide. “Ow!”

His pale lips now had a smear of red–it was her blood. He’d bitten her.

She set the bowl down and grumbled, “Seriously? You’re out cold and still trying to bite me? I was saving your life!”

She held her lip. “You bit me, and I still saved you. That’s gratitude for you.”

He didn’t stir. Just lay there, chest rising and falling.

Celine peeked in, thinking enough time had passed. She spotted Arden’s bleeding lip. “Arden, what happened?”

“Your brother bit me. And it freaking hurt.”

Celine glanced at Dorian–his lips were red too. The implication of how the medicine had been given was obvious. Her cheeks flushed.

Arden exhaled and told her, “When he wakes up, don’t tell him how he took the medicine.”

“Okay. Do you want something for the cut?”

“I’ll be fine.”

Arden tried to pull her hand back again. He still wouldn’t let go.

She sighed. “I’ll stay here with him tonight. Celine, go get some sleep. You can take over in the morning.”
