“What if I refuse to let go?”

Arden snapped, “We’re divorced. Mr. Vale, it’s over. We’re strangers now.”

“Strangers?”

Dorian’s lips curled into a twisted smile. His expression sent a chill down her spine.

His jaw tightened, fists clenching over the blanket. His eyes locked onto hers, darker than ever. “Arden, seriously? You really think that divorce happened just because you asked for it?”

“What… what do you mean by that?”

His smirk widened, unsettling her even more. “Exactly what it sounds like.”

“We signed the papers, Dorian. It’s over.”

Cute. She really believed that.

Dorian had fallen hard for Arden. She was the only one who’d ever really mattered, and that scared the hell out of him. There was no way he would’ve let her go without a fight.

Before he left the country, he told Lucien–if he didn’t make it back, finalize the divorce so Arden could move on and find someone who truly cared for her.

But if he survived? No way he was letting her go.

No matter who tried to stand by her side, protect her–he wouldn’t trust them. Wouldn’t allow it.

So the divorce paperwork he gave her? Never actually filed.

When you were Dorian Vale, head of one of the most powerful families, faking legal documents was a minor inconvenience at best.

Arden’s eyes widened, realization sinking in. “So that day–when you signed the papers, when you told me it was done–none of it was real?”

Dorian didn’t even flinch. “No. I never filed anything. As far as the law’s concerned, we’re still married.”

He said it like it was nothing–like stringing her along and faking a divorce was no big deal.

Arden stood there, stunned.

Then the anger came rushing in.

Her chest tightened, and her voice cracked as she stepped forward, gripping his shoulders and shaking him. “Dorian, how could you? How could you be so selfish, so cruel?! You lied to me? Even the divorce was fake?”

She shook him hard. Too hard.

Dorian let out a grunt, clutching his side. He looked up at her–her eyes wild, her voice trembling

Arden let go immediately. But her eyes were still brimming with tears. Her gaze dropped to his abdomen. Blood was seeping through his bandages.

She took a deep breath. “You’re still injured. I don’t want to argue with you right now. I’d rather not be blamed if you pass out or bleed to death. I’ve got nothing to give you. So don’t try to make me pay for it.”

She straightened up. One tear slipped from her eye and fell onto Dorian’s hand.

It was freezing in the room, but that single drop burned.

Dorian lowered his eyes to look at it. Arden turned around.

He saw her wipe her face hard with the back of her hand. She was crying.

She bolted out of the room. Dorian tried to get up and follow. “Arden-”

She whirled around, furious, pointing at him. “Don’t you dare. Save your life, Dorian. You push yourself any harder and you’ll fry your brain. And I swear, I won’t be there to help you.”

Celine came in with a bowl of warm water just in time to see Arden rush past her, red–eyed and trembling. “Arden? What happened?”

“I’m going home.”

Her voice wobbled as she walked off.

“Huh? But Martha just made chicken soup and oatmeal–Arden, have a bite before you go!”

“No thanks. I’m going to bed.”

She ran out. No one dared stop her–without Dorian’s orders, no one would even try. She ran all the way out of the villa, breath uneven.

Inside, Dorian called Lucien. “She left. Take her home.”

“Yes, sir.”

Lucien hurried out, pulling the car around to the front gate.

Since the villa was tucked in a quiet part of town, it wasn’t easy to get a ride. By the time he arrived, Arden was still staring down at her phone, trying to book a rideshare.

Lucien rolled down the window. “Mrs. Vale, Mr. Vale asked me to take you home.”

“No.”
