Arden, normally composed and polite, turned cold in an instant. She gave Lucien a sharp look. “How many times have I told you not to call me that? Are your cars broken? My name is Arden. I’m not your boss’s wife. I’m not getting in your car. Just go.”

“But-”

Arden had no interest in arguing. She kept walking and tried to hail a ride. But with the snow coming down hard, no car would stop.

Frustrated, she gave in and called Caleb.

His voice came through the phone. Just hearing it made her feel more choked up.

“Arden? You’re not at work this morning?”

“Caleb.”

Just saying his name made her voice break.

The snow was falling thick and fast. The sun had vanished behind a wall of gray clouds. Flakes swirled around her like a storm, and suddenly, she felt very cold.

“Arden, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”

“Can you come pick me up?”

Caleb stood. “Of course. Where are you?”

He checked his watch. “It’s almost nine. Did you eat anything yet?”

“No… I haven’t. I’m at Silverbay Villa.”

Caleb paused. “Silverbay Villa? That’s your old place with Dorian. What are you doing there?”

“He just got back injured. Last night they gave him a critical notice. I went to see him.”

Caleb hadn’t heard about the fake pregnancy. He already had a poor opinion of Dorian and didn’t want to bring him up again. “Why are you crying then?”

“Just come get me first.”

“On my way.”

Meanwhile, Lucien, driving slowly behind Arden, called Dorian. The call connected immediately.

“Boss,” Lucien said quickly.

“Did you get her?”

“No. She wouldn’t get in the car.”

Dorian didn’t respond at first. Lucien grew nervous. “She was crying, boss. Her eyes were red. Did something happen between you two?”

“Where is she now?”

“She’s on the phone, still trying to find a ride. It’s hard with all this snow.”

“Stay close. Don’t let anything happen to her.”

“She seemed fine when she came to see you last night. Why’d she walk out in tears?”

Dorian ended the call and sat back in bed, trying to get up and make it to the window.

Celine had been caught off guard by Arden’s tears too. She rushed over to support him. “What did you do this time? You made Arden cry?”

“You think I’d hurt her on purpose?”

“You’ve had four years to prove otherwise. If you didn’t do anything, why’d she run out of here crying?”

Dorian pressed his lips together, saying nothing.

“She sat by your side all night, brought you water, stayed with you when you were out cold. And now you’re up, just to break her heart again?”

“Shut up.” Dorian was already on edge. He thought Arden still liked him. Thought she’d never let him go that easily.

But maybe he was wrong.

Her eyes were cool, distant–not the look of someone who’d run through fire just to be with him.

“What did you say to her? Her eyes were swollen.”

“Celine, maybe worry about your own issues. Why’d you drop your program abroad and come back to Avalen?”

Celine shut up quickly. “Fine. I’ll stop. But Arden’s a good person. If you don’t like her, then stop hurting her. Next time you’re on death’s door, don’t expect me to call her.”

With that, she stormed out.

She nearly collided with Kade at the door. He reached out just in time to steady her, one hand catching her

waist.

Even through her thick coat, she was soft and slim. Kade immediately let go, stepped back, and lowered his gaze. “Miss Vale.”

No one saw how fast his heart was pounding or how his ears turned red.

Celine was still fuming. Seeing one of her brother’s men only made it worse. Her temper snapped. “You’re huge. Can’t you watch where you’re going? Guess it makes sense. Like boss, like guard. Both totally useless.”
