Chapter 80 I Meant What I Said

Dorian had never been publicly rejected like that. His face was thunderous. Jaw clenched. Fists tight.
He didn’t follow her into the elevator. He took the executive one instead. Still seething, he yanked at his tie.
Lucien stood nearby, barely daring to breathe. Holy crap. The boss… just got dumped.
Lucien glanced at his expressionless, stone–cold boss. Yep. Officially abandoned.
Meanwhile, Arden stood in the elevator, still a little shaken.
But she’d done it. She’d finally said the words out loud. And she was ready–if they fired her, so be it. Turns out, saying no… wasn’t that hard.
Back on the 26th floor, Clark was already waiting for her. “Yo, Arden. That gorgeous girl who picked you up last night–what’s her name?”
Arden narrowed her eyes. “Why?”
Clark looked way too eager. “Does she have a boyfriend?”
Arden shook her head. Clark ran a hand through his hair and adjusted his shirt collar.
“Be honest. How do I look today?”
“Like a person with a face,” Arden said flatly.
Clark was stunned. “…Seriously? Give me a real answer. Be honest. Do you think I’m good- looking?”
She nodded. “Sure. You’re not bad.”
That fired him up even more. “Right? I’m a self–made man! That’s gotta be attractive.”
Talia glanced up at him and said, “What’s with you this morning, Clark, trying to show off already?”
Clark grinned. “Come on, Talia, be honest. How do you think your boy here looks today?”
Talia gave him a once–over. “Wait a second, you didn’t actually catch feelings for Arden’s friend, did you? She pulled up in a supercar that costs more than this whole floor. That kind of confidence doesn’t scream normal family. You really think you can keep up with that?“.

Clark didn’t flinch. “Hey, I’m not exactly broke either, you know. Besides, love isn’t about money.”
He turned toward Arden. “Think you could slide me her number?”
Arden hesitated. “Let me ask her first.”
“Cool. Just hype me up a little while you’re at it.”

She
gave him a polite smile and nodded, then quietly turned to her computer and opened a blank document. If no one fired her by lunch, she’d resign herself.
She carefully typed out the resignation letter, then moved on to checking through the day’s data. As lunchtime neared, she saw Warren still in his office. She grabbed the freshly printed letter and knocked on his door.
She placed the paper on his desk. Warren blinked, then took off his glasses to clean them, just to make sure he wasn’t imagining things. “You’re resigning? Why?”
“I just don’t want to do this anymore.”
Usually, with a fresh–out–of–college hire, he wouldn’t bother asking questions. Either keep up or get out–this was Vale Group, after all, not a charity. People fought tooth and nail to get in here.
But for some reason, he had a gut feeling. Dorian seemed to treat Arden… differently.
So he didn’t approve it right away. “Resigning isn’t that simple. It has to go through department review.”
“Okay. Then please start the process as soon as possible.”
With that, she turned and walked out. Warren immediately called Lucien.
Lucien answered, and Warren didn’t waste time. “Sir, Arden from our department just handed in her resignation. Is Mr. Vale around? Can you check if he wants to approve this?”
Lucien’s expression froze. “Don’t approve anything yet. I’ll ask the boss.”
He hung up and marched straight to Dorian’s office. “Come in.”
Dorian was reviewing contracts when Lucien rushed in, clearly flustered. “Sir, Arden submitted her resignation. Warren just called to ask if it should be processed.”
That familiar pressure returned. His mind flashed back to how Arden had looked at him this morning–clear, cold, done.
She’d asked him to fire her. And when he didn’t, she took control herself.

He tossed the pen aside, leaned back, and rubbed his temples. “Tell him she’s not going anywhere. Don’t process it.”
Lucien nodded and made the call. Meanwhile, Dorian picked up his phone and texted his grandmother.
Dorian texted, “Arden wants to quit. Didn’t you say she should stay at the company to keep an eye on me? Maybe you should talk to her.”
Eugenia hadn’t heard about the drama at the auction the night before. She texted back almost immediately. “Why would Arden want to quit? Did someone upset her? You’re the CEO–if anyone’s messing with your wife, you need to stand up for her.”
Dorian replied, “She won’t listen to me. Maybe she’ll listen to you.”
Back downstairs, Arden was called into Warren’s office again.
“You’ve actually been doing well lately,” he said. “I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to resign. We just assigned you to Sienna, and now that you two are finally in sync, if you leave, she’s back to doing twice the work.”
“You can always hire someone new.”
“You haven’t broken any rules, and you’re from Avalen University. We’re committed to training top talent. And let’s be real–you just graduated. You’ve got zero actual work experience. You think other companies are gonna roll out the red carpet for you?”
