Talia smacked Clark’s arm. “Seriously? Is this just how guys are? No impulse control unless they’re on a leash? You’re all just hormones in sneakers.”
“Whoa, how’d this end up about me?” Clark said, pretending to be offended. “I’m a good guy, okay? Arden, don’t go telling your friend anything weird.”
Arden shook her head.
Clark leaned forward. “You just graduated, right? Got a boyfriend yet? I’ve got cousins, friends, all single, all high–quality guys. The kind who love sweet girls like you.”
He wasn’t even trying to whisper. His voice carried.
Dorian, sitting at the next table, heard every word. He turned abruptly and saw Arden sitting there with Sienna and the others.
And yes, he definitely heard the part about Clark offering to set b cigarette and stood. Then started walking over.
He reached their table, and Clark opened his mouth to keep talking, but Talia elbowed him.
“Dude, what?” Clark muttered. “I’m just saying, Arden doesn’t have a boyfriend, I know some decent guys. Let her try dating one–what’s the harm?”
Talia whispered quickly, “Mr. Vale. Mr. Vale’s right behind you.”
Arden was sipping her coffee, completely unaware. Dorian said, voice low and controlled, “Arden doesn’t have a boyfriend?”
He stood there, one hand in his pocket, his presence as heavy as ever. “If you’re working, maybe focus on that. This isn’t a dating club. You’re here to work, not flirt.”
God bless capitalism.
Arden looked up. Their eyes met. His were dark, sharp, and dangerous–like something wild just barely caged.
Arden answered slowly, “Mr. Vale, do you monitor whether your employees are allowed to have personal lives now?”
Clark nodded. “Yeah, seriously.”
Arden added, “Relax, Mr. Vale. Even if we date someone, we’ll still hit all our deadlines.”
She turned to Clark. “Hey, shoot me your friend’s WhatsApp later when we’re back at the office.”
“You got it. He’s a gentle one, very chill. You two would totally click.”
And the moment he said it, Clark felt it–someone was staring at him like they wanted to skin him alive. He Jooked up and met Dorian’s narrowed eyes, cold as hell. It was like he’d touched a nerve he shouldn’t have.

The tension? Palpable. Clark shut his mouth instantly. Everyone stood up. “Mr. Vale.”
Only Arden stayed seated like nothing had happened. Then Clark, clearly not reading the room, asked, “Mr. Vale, done with your date?”
Dorian turned his head. “Who said that was a date?”
“Well, we saw the woman sitting with you…”
Dorian instinctively glanced at Arden. She was sipping her iced coffee, lips red, not even looking up.
That “whatever” attitude? It got under his skin. Was she really that indifferent? Or just pretending? Dorian didn’t respond. He turned and walked away.
Everyone let out a collective breath. Talia looked at Arden. “You’re not even scared of the boss?“”
“I’m just here to sell my soul for a paycheck. What’s there to be scared of?”
Talia gave her a huge thumbs up. They finished their coffee and headed back. Arden had a meeting at SkyRise Group that afternoon with Sienna, so she tried to catch a nap.
Her phone buzzed. Dorian texted, “Wait for me after work. We need to talk.”
She didn’t reply. Another message came. “When are you going to take me off your block list?” Still no
response.
Dorian waited all afternoon for her reply. It never came. Arden napped, then headed with Sienna to SkyRise for the meeting.
Backed by Dorian’s authority, Sienna didn’t hold back. Not a single percentage point was given away. Arden saw a whole new side of her. In her sharp suit, Sienna was calm, decisive, confident. Arden sat beside her, hands damp with nervous sweat.
SkyRise was no pushover. They went at it all afternoon, and by the time they left, it was already six.
Sienna offered her a ride, but Arden waved it off. “Thanks, but I wanna wander around here for a bit. You go
ahead.”
“Alright. Be careful.”
“Bye, Sienna.”
Just after waving her off, Arden’s phone rang. “Hello?”
“Where are you?” Dorian’s voice.
“Mr. Vale. You need something?”
“I told you to wait after work.”
She honestly forgot. There was a beat of silence. “Do you need something from me?”
Yeah. When are you taking me off block?”

“Not happening. We don’t have anything to talk about.”
Dorian was quiet for a moment. “I’m outside your apartment. Open the door.”
Arden froze. “What the hell are you doing at my place?”
“We need to talk.”
“I don’t want to talk. Go home, Dorian.”
