Arden had to give herself a little pep talk. Pretend he’s not even there. You’re just here to work. That’s it.
At 2:00 PM, Warren called her in again. She kept her head low as she stepped into the office. “Warren.”
“You’re heading up to executive. Mr. Vale and Lucien are waiting for you. You’re flying to Zevia with them.”
“Okay.”
She looked completely drained, like the life had been sucked out of her. Warren shot her a look.
“Arden,” he said, “when you see the boss, at least try to smile. Right now you look like someone dragged you here at gunpoint. You gotta look like this is a golden opportunity, not a death sentence.”
Isn’t it, though?Like I even had a say in it.
When Arden reached the 28th floor, Lucien was already waiting by the office door. He greeted her quickly. “Good afternoon, Mrs… Miss Wynn. The boss is inside.”
Then he knocked. “Come in,” came Dorian’s voice from inside.
Dorian adjusted the cuffs on his shirt and looked toward the door as she walked in.
Her eyes were a little swollen. He noticed immediately. Cried last night? For hours? But her face gave nothing away. She didn’t even glance at him.
“Do you need to go home and pack?” he asked.
“I do.”
“Alright. Come with me. We’ll stop by your place. Plane leaves at 2:30
Originally, he’d planned to take the private jet, but figured she’d refuse, so he had Lucien book first class tickets instead.
Arden looked at him and said, “Mr. Vale, your secretary department has a dozen assistants. Why me? I’m not even trained for business travel.”
He had expected that question. “Because I need a female companion.”
Arden frowned. “You? Lacking female company?”
He met her eyes calmly. “I’m missing one that looks like you.”
She was speechless. He couldn’t help asking, “Did you cry last night?”
“No.”
“Alright. Go pack.”
Arden turned and left without another word. Dorian raised a brow. Attitude.

She didn’t take his car. It was a short ride anyway, so she took off the moment she left his office and hit the
elevator.
By the time Dorian stepped out, the elevator doors were already closing. Lucien lunged and hit the button just in time. Lucien smiled awkwardly. “Mrs. Vale, the boss is just behind-”
“Isn’t there a private elevator for executives?” Arden asked.
“I like taking the employee elevator,” Dorian said as he stepped inside with one hand in his pocket.
Arden automatically moved to the far corner and stayed silent, pressed against the wall. Dorian noticed how she was practically hugging the elevator panel to avoid him. His face didn’t look too great either.
Lucien felt the tension in the air and couldn’t wait to get out.
When they hit the ground floor, Arden waited until the two men stepped out before she followed, heading straight for the exit.
Didn’t even glance at Dorian. Lucien asked quietly, “Should I drive around and pick her up?”
Dorian looked at Arden’s stubborn figure walking away fast. “No. She’s not gonna get in. Just pull up near her place. Wait there.”
So Dorian waited outside her building in his car. It didn’t take long. Arden only packed the essentials: documents, toiletries, some skincare, and a couple changes of clothes. Everything fit in a small bag.
As she came downstairs, sure enough, she spotted the familiar black Maybach. Dorian stepped out of the car and walked toward her. He reached out.
“Let me take that.”
Arden didn’t even acknowledge the hand. She walked around him, bag in both hands.
Dorian stood there with his hand awkwardly hanging in the air. After a second, he walked up beside her again and this time just took the bag from her hands without asking.
His fingers brushed hers. She jerked her hand back immediately. But he already had the bag. Without a word, he handed it off to Lucien, then opened the car door for her.
Arden ducked in without even sparing him a glance. Dorian didn’t care.
As long as she was coming with him to Zevia, that’s all that mattered. He needed her close. Only then could he feel at ease.
Arden stayed quiet the whole ride, eyes fixed on the window. She didn’t say a single word.
Dorian worked on his laptop in silence. Lucien watched the two in the rearview mirror. These two were supposed to be married? No way.
They didn’t even look like they belonged in the same universe. When they arrived at the airport, they had about an hour before boarding.
Their seats were first class. Arden had the window. Dorian took the aisle.

Just as he sat down, a sweet, surprised voice chimed in behind him. “Dorian?”
A girl’s voice. Arden didn’t even turn her head. She just looked out the window. It was Mira.

She walked up to him like they were old friends. “Wow, what a coincidence. You’re going to Zevia too?”
“Yeah,” Dorian said flatly.
Mira glanced at Arden, clearly hoping to swap seats. She was only a single aisle away from Dorian–he sat on the left, she on the right. Too close for comfort.
But Arden didn’t budge. No matter what Dorian said to Mira, she never once turned her head. Instead, she dug through her bag, pulled out a pair of earbuds, and shoved them in like she was done with the entire
situation.
