Chapter 1
‘I’m taking three days off.”
lay in bed, the C–section incision burning like fire.
For what?”
My husband Charles didn’t even glance at me, yanking his shoelaces tight. “Vivian’s moving. She needs help.”
Vivian. His EX–WIFE.
I just had major surgery two weeks ago! Our baby is barely sleeping through the night!”
My mom’s here. You’ll be fine.”
tried to continue, but he’d already grabbed his car keys and headed for the door.
I’ll be back in three days.”
Charles Miller!”
The door slammed shut.
My mother–in–law walked in with a mug of lactation tea. “You know, Vivian’s all alone now. You have me, you have the baby. top being so selfish.”
My hands clenched the sheets.
Here.” She shoved the mug onto the nightstand. “Just focus on your child. Stop complaining.”
stared at her, then at the door.
So I and our newborn come second to his ex–wife’s moving day?”
pushed myself up, ignoring the pain ripping through my abdomen.
Then what the hell do I need him for? He can go be with her. I’m DONE!”
stared at the mug of lactation tea. Hadn’t touched it.
My mother–in–law had already retreated to the living room, TV blaring. The Maury Povich Show–her favorite.
The baby slept beside me, face still wrinkled and red. He’s only fifteen days old.
My C–section incision hadn’t even been cleared by the doctor yet.

Chapter 1
Last night, the baby cried four times. I nursed four times. Charles slept through it all in the guest room–said he needed rest
for work.
This morning, he got dressed like he was going to a business meeting. Said he was taking time off.
For a second, I thought he’d finally remembered–oh right, I have a wife who just had surgery and a newborn.
Jope. He was helping his EX–WIFE move.
Vivian. I’d been hearing that name for three years.
Before we got married, Charles said they “ended things amicably.” No drama.
fter we got married? Turns out “no drama” actually meant **he’s still in love with her.
Vivian’s car broke down? Charles fixed it.
Vivian’s laptop crashed? Charles drove over.
Vivian’s lightbulb went out? Charles changed it.
Every time I said I wasn’t feeling well, he’d say: “She’s a woman living alone. She has no one.”
‘d say: “I’m a woman too.”
Ie’d say: “You have my mom.”
glanced toward the living room. My mother–in–law was eating fried chicken, laughing at the TV.
picked up my phone. Opened Instagram. Charles’s latest post from three days ago:
Proud of my wife. Both mom and baby are safe. ?”
‘hoto: our baby’s tiny foot.
scrolled down. A month ago, he’d posted:
Weekend vibes
‘hoto: two coffee cups. One black coffee. One latte.
We both drank lattes. The black coffee was for Vivian.
That day, I was home on bed rest. He said he was “working late.”
Guess he just didn’t want to be around his pregnant whale of a wife.
I put the phone down. Stared at the ceiling.

Chapter 1
The baby started crying.
I tried to sit up. The incision ripped with pain.
‘Mary!” I called out my mother–in–law.
Nothing. The TV was too loud.
bit down hard, slowly pushed myself upright, and lifted the baby to nurse.
Fifteen minutes later, the baby was asleep.
I was drenched in sweat. My incision felt… wet.
looked down.
Blood. Blood was seeping through the bandage.
Mary!” I shouted louder this time.
She finally shuffled in, annoyed. “What’s all the yelling? You’ll wake the baby.”
I’m bleeding.”
She glanced at my stomach. “It’s just a little blood. You’re overreacting. When I had Charles, I was up and walking by day hree.”
I had a C–section!”
So? Women these days are so dramatic.”
he turned and left.
lay there, tears sliding down my face.
Not from sadness. From pain.
My incision hurt. My chest hurt.
grabbed my phone. Texted Charles:
“I’m bleeding from the incision.”
tead.
Jo reply.
I waited five minutes. Texted again:
