Chapter 2
4 PM. Charles still wasn’t home.
I’d called him 99 times. 98 went to voicemail. One, he declined.
The 100th time, he finally picked up.
The background was loud, filled with laughter.
“What?”
“My incision is still bleeding. I need to go to the ER.”
“I TOLD you to ask my mom.”
“Your mom said it’s nothing!”
“Then it’s nothing.”
I gripped the phone tighter. “Charles, I’m in fucking pain!”
‘Vivian’s place is a mess, I can’t just-”
‘I DON’T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT VIVIAN! I’M YOUR WIFE!”
The line went silent for a few seconds.
Then I heard her voice. Soft. Sugary sweet.
‘Charles, where should I put this box?”
He covered the phone. Muffled: “Bedroom.”
My stomach dropped.
Charles.” My voice was ice. “Are you in her bedroom right now?”
I’m helping her move. Jesus Christ, Elena-”
You’re in your ex–wife’s bedroom while I’m bleeding at home with your child?”
‘DON’T START WITH ME!” His voice exploded through the phone. “I’m helping a friend! Why do you always have to make it about sex?!”
‘I didn’t say shit about sex! I asked where you were!”
Chapter 2
“Your TONE says everything! You think I’m cheating? Seriously-”
“My TONE?! My TONE is the problem?! Not the fact that you’re playing house with your ex while I’m literally **falling apart**?!”
“You’re INSANE! I don’t have time for this. Vivian can’t move the furniture by herself.”
“And what about me?”
“You have my mom.”
He hung up.
I stared at the phone. My hands were shaking.
Mary walked in, carrying a bowl of soup.
‘Stop screaming. You’ll wake the baby.”
‘Mary.” I looked at her. “My incision is infected.”
‘It’s **fine**.” She set the soup down with a loud clank. “Drink this. Sleep. You’ll be fine.”
‘I need to go to the hospital.”
‘Hospital, hospital, HOSPITAL!” She threw her hands up. “Do you know how much an ER visit costs?!
‘I don’t care what it costs-”
”
‘Well, I do! This family isn’t made of money! You think we can just throw thousands of dollars away because you’re a little
incomfortable?!”
‘Uncomfortable?!” I yanked the blanket off. “LOOK AT IT!”
She glanced down. Her face twitched.
It’s… it’s just a little red-”
It’s INFECTED! It’s OOZING! Are you BLIND?!”
Don’t you DARE raise your voice at me!” Mary’s face flushed red. “You know who didn’t act like this? Vivian had a C–section 00. She was up cooking by day three. Never whined!”
You want to know why Vivian was so perfect?” I leaned forward, ignoring the pain ripping through my abdomen. “Because your son wasn’t screwing someone else while she recovered.”
Mary’s face went white. Then red. Then white again.
‘I don’t want to fight with you. Just rest, princess. Your drama can wait!”
She turned and left.

Chapter 2
I leaned back against the headboard. Tears streamed down my face.
I didn’t know what to say. Or who to say it to.
My parents were 500 miles away in Ohio.
My mom had wanted to come help. My mother–in–law said no–insisted she could “handle it.”
My mom believed her.
I believed her.
Now I finally understood.
She didn’t want to “handle it.” She wanted to make sure my mom couldn’t come.
A

grabbed my phone. Texted my best friend, Sophia:
> “Soph, can you come over? Please?”
“What’s wrong?”
. “My incision is bleeding. No one’s helping me.”
“Where are you? I’m coming now!”
Twenty minutes later, Sophia arrived.
he took one look at my face and her expression darkened.
Jesus, Elena. You look awful.”
he pulled back the blanket. Looked at my incision.
Holy shit.”
ler face went pale.
We’re going to the ER. Now!”
he helped me stand. My mother–in–law jumped up from the couch.
Where are you going?”
Her incision is infected. She needs a doctor.”
she walked over, glanced at my stomach.
‘Maybe it’s not that bad…”

“Wait–I’ll call Charles-”
“Don’t.” My voice was quiet. But clear.
