Chapter 11
The second hearing.
This time, I came with new evidence.
A screenshot of the employee roster at Charles’s company. Vivian’s social security contribution records: And a photograph.
t was Charles and Vivian at a coffee shop near his office building. The timestamp read: one week ago. In the photo, they were itting close together, Vivian’s hand resting on Charles’s arm.
Sophia had hired a private investigator to get this shot. It wasn’t cheap. But it was worth every penny.
The judge reviewed the evidence, his expression growing increasingly stern.
Mr. Miller, what do you have to say about this?”
Charles’s face went deathly pale.
She’s… she’s just a coworker-”
A coworker?” The judge flipped through the documents. “How many employees does your company have?”
Over three hundred-
Out of over three hundred people, your ex–wife just happened to get a job at your company, just happened to end up in your lepartment, and just happened to be having coffee with you. Is that what you’re calling a coincidence?”
It wasn’t a date-”
Mr. Miller, I remind you that perjury carries legal consequences.”
Charles fell silent.
Benjamin stood up,
Your Honor, the plaintiff believes that the defendant has maintained an inappropriate relationship with his ex–wife and leliberately facilitated her employment at his company, which constitutes strong evidence of marital infidelity. The plaintiff equests that the defendant receive a reduced share in the division of marital assets.”
Does the defense have anything to say?”
Charles’s lawyer opened his mouth but couldn’t form a response.
The judge looked at both parties.
‘This court will issue a final ruling at a later date.”
After the hearing, Mary intercepted me outside the courthouse. Her eyes were red and swollen, whether from crying or anger,

I couldn’t tell.
“Elena, do you have to destroy my son?!”
I looked at her but said nothing.
‘He was just being kind, helping out his ex–wife. Is that really so terrible?!”
‘Helping?” I let out a short laugh. “Mary, getting your ex–wife hired at your company, is that what you call helping?”
Mary froze.
‘She… she got the job on her own merit-”
‘She’s in Charles’s department.”
Mary’s face changed.
‘They see each other every single day. Is that still just helping?”
Mary had no response.
Mary, three years ago you told me Charles and Vivian had no lingering ties. You told me I had nothing to worry about.” I poke slowly, deliberately. “Now do you understand what ‘lingering ties‘ actually means?”
Mary’s lips trembled.
Elena, can’t you just-”
Just what?” I cut her off. “Just give up my rights? Just accept a husband who isn’t faithful? Just suffer in silence when I’m hurt
nd abandoned?”
You-”
Mary, I gave Charles countless chances.” I looked directly into her eyes. “Every single time, he said he’d change. Every single ime, nothing changed. Now he’s brought his ex–wife into his workplace. They’re together every day. What exactly do you
xpect me to do?”
Mary’s tears started falling.
He… he’ll change…”
No, he won’t,” I shook my head. “He doesn’t want to change.”
walked past her toward Sophia’s car. Behind me, I could hear Mary crying. I didn’t look back.
A month later, the ruling came down.
Divorce granted.
Custody awarded to me.

Chapter 11
Charles ordered to pay 2,500 in child support per month.
My share of the home appreciation and joint mortgage payments: 650,000.
Reimbursement for dissipation of marital assets (transfers to ex–wife): 50%, totaling 36,000.
Total: 686,000.
Additionally, the court found that Charles had committed marital fault and awarded me a larger share of the marital property accordingly.
The day I received the final judgment, I stood outside the courthouse holding those papers.
The sun was bright. The breeze was warm.
Sophia walked over and put her hand on my shoulder.
“Girl, congratulations. You’re free.”
I smiled.
“Thank you, Soph.”
“Don’t thank me. We’re sisters.”
I carefully folded the judgment and took a deep breath.
‘Let’s go home.”
‘I’m taking you out for a celebration dinner.”
‘What are we having?”
‘Steak. Expensive steak.”
‘Let’s do it.”
We got in the car. As Sophia pulled away from the curb, I glanced back at the courthouse one last time.
The man in the suit was still standing there. His shoulders were slumped. I thought I saw tears in his eyes.
turned away and didn’t look back again.
