Ex-Wife Moving Wife Giving Birth? Congratulations, You’re Single Now novel Chapter 12

Chapter 12

A year later.

I sat in my new apartment, watching the sunset paint the sky outside my window.

My son was on his play mat nearby, stacking blocks and giggling to himself. He was over a year old now. He could say

Mama.

He could walk. He could reach up his chubby little arms and say Up, up!in that sweet, babbling voice.

I watched him, and I couldn’t help but smile.

So much had happened this past year.

I’d gone back to work. My position was still waiting for me, and my colleagues had been incredibly supportive. I’d even gotten promoted. Now I was assistant department manager, making 18,000 a month.

I’d bought this little apartment. Six hundred square feet. Just big enough for me and my son. I’d used the 680,000 from the divorce settlement as a down payment.

The monthly mortgage was 3,500, manageable on my salary.

My parents came to visit sometimes, staying for a few days to help with the baby. I’d hired a housekeeper who came in daily to cook and clean.

Life was routine. Peaceful. And happy.

Charles paid child support on time every month. He never missed a payment. Sometimes he asked to see our son, and I agreed. After all, he was still the boy’s father.

But our communication ended there. His life was no longer my concern.

Sophia told me he and Vivian had gotten together. But apparently it didn’t last long. Vivian had left him because he didn’t lave enough money. After all, he’d had to sell his share of the house and pay me 680,000. There wasn’t much left.

Mary had moved into a nursing home. Charles visited her once a month. The rest of the time, he was alone.

heard he’d lost a lot of weight. That his hair was starting to turn gray.

When I heard these updates, I felt nothing. Not satisfaction. Not vindication. Justnothing.

The man who once broke my heart was now just a stranger. The things that once made me cry were now just dust in the wind.

d moved on a long time ago.

That evening, after I’d put my son to bed, I sat on the balcony with a cup of tea. My phone rang. An unknown number.

Chapter 12

I answered.

Hello?

Elena, it’s me.

Mary’s voice.

What is it?

II’d like to see the baby.

I was quiet for a moment.

Mary, Charles comes to see him every month. You can come with him..

I knowbut I was hopingI could see him alone.

Her voice cracked slightly.

Elena, I know I wronged you. Back then, II was foolish.

Seeing Charles the way he is now, I regret it. I should have talked some sense into him

It’s all in the past, Mary.

Yes. Yes, it is.She let out a long sigh. But the babyhe’s still my grandson. I just want to see him.

thought about it.

Next weekend. I’ll bring him to see you.

Thank you. Thank you so much, Elena.

Don’t mention it.

hung up and looked out at the night sky. The moon was full. The stars were bright.

let out a soft sigh.

Some grudges, time takes away. Some wounds, time heals.

I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life carrying hatred.

My son needed to know he had a grandmother. No matter how that grandmother had once treated his mother.

She was part of his bloodline. His roots. I had no right to cut that connection for him.

But that man. That marriage. Those wounds. I would never forget them.

Not to hold a grudge. But to remind myself.

Next time, be braver. Next time, be more decisive. Next time, love yourself more.

I stood up and walked back inside. My son was sleeping soundly in his crib. I bent down and kissed his forehead.

Good night, sweetheart.

Mommy loves you.

Outside, the moonlight spilled through the window like water. Inside, everything was peaceful.

In that moment, I suddenly felt that all the pain had been worth it.

Because I had gained the most precious things: freedom, dignity, and this small home that was truly mine.

My phone buzzed. A text from Sophia:

Hey, you free tomorrow? I want you to meet someone.

I smiled and typed back:

Maybe later.

Let me just be a mom for a while.

No rush.

I sent the message, turned off my phone, and lay down in bed. Closed my eyes.

Outside, a breeze drifted through the window. Soft and warm.

Like the scent of a new beginning.
