Chapter 6
That evening, Lorna showed up at our door with red–rimmed eyes and a gift basket, ready to apologize.
“I’m so sorry, Zachary, Tina saw that nail on the floor near Jane’s foot.
She was worried Jane might step on it, so she bent down to pick it up…”
“But still, Tina was in the wrong. I’m here to apologize on her behalf.”
Zachary pushed away her gift basket. “Nobody wanted this to happen.
Tina’s just a kid who doesn’t know better. Jane will understand.”
I burst out of the house, seeing Zachary and Lorna standing there like the perfect couple, and completely lost it.
“Lorna, save your crocodile tears–they make me sick!
Zachary, I DON’T understand! Why do I always have to bend over backward for you and Lorna? Who gave you the right to decide how forgiving I should be?”
Yelling wasn’t enough. I spotted the trash can by the door, grabbed it, and hurled the contents at this cheating bastard and his homewrecking whore.
Zachary instinctively shielded Lorna, taking the full brunt of rotten garbage across his back.
Lorna couldn’t escape entirely–she got splattered across her face and hair.
She started shrieking: “What the hell is wrong with you?”
Zachary turned around, looking pathetic and disheveled, staring at me with those pitiful eyes.
“Feel better now?
Take it out on me if you want, but Lorna’s innocent in this.”
I hurled the empty trash can at Zachary’s head. He didn’t even try to dodge.
Just stood there like a martyr, those sad eyes locked on mine.
The can hit him square in the forehead with a loud THUNK.
Lorna screamed again, rushing to check his wound.
“Jane, how can you be so heartless?”
I grabbed the baseball bat leaning by our front door and headed straight for Lorna. She scrambled backward in terror.
“Zachary, run! Jane’s completely lost it!”
I swung the bat toward Lorna, but Zachary stepped forward and grabbed the other end.
“Let go!” I glared at him.

Chapter 6
Zachary shook his head, his eyes welling up, lips trembling.
“Jane, you’re sick. Don’t hurt innocent people. Hit me instead.”
I couldn’t wrench the bat free, so I just stared him down with pure hatred.
Zachary shouted to Lorna, “Just go home, Lorna! We should probably… keep some distance for a while.”
Lorna looked shocked but didn’t stick around to argue, afraid I’d actually beat her senseless. She ran off like her ass was on fire.
Once she was gone, Zachary released the bat. The sudden loss of resistance sent it swinging back, smacking him in the neck.
He groaned in pain, his face flushing red.
But he still looked at me with that gentle, understanding smile.
“Jane, we have money. We can get you help.”
