Chapter 7
“I got first place in the whole district. The teacher wants my parents there tomorrow for the award ceremony and to give a speech.”
Kevin’s voice came out muffled after dinner.
Zachary beamed and patted Kevin’s shoulder. “That’s my boy! We’re so proud of you.”
Sherry grinned and chimed in, “I’m gonna study as hard as you do!”
Kevin looked at me hopefully, but when he saw me set down my bowl with zero expression and get up to leave, he snapped:
“Fine, don’t come! I’ll ask Aunt Lorna instead. You’d probably just embarrass me anyway!”
I finally gave him a glance. “Do whatever you want.”
Zachary smacked Kevin upside the head.
“Watch your mouth! She’s your mother! Lorna’s just an outsider.”
Kevin shot back, “It’s not like I didn’t tell her! Look how much she cares!”
“I’ll talk your mom into going.”
“Whatever! I don’t give a damn!”
I shut my bedroom door and sat on the bed, working on some sewing.
I had no idea what had gotten into them.
In my past life, Kevin didn’t even bother telling me about the ceremony. He secretly invited Zachary and Lorna instead.
I only found out from one of Kevin’s classmates.
I got so excited that I rushed home from the college, threw off my work clothes, and put on my best red dress.
I was terrified I’d miss Kevin’s big moment and he’d resent me for not caring.
The bumpy bus ride nearly made me throw up, but I pushed through.
When I finally arrived, there were Zachary and Lorna on stage, each with a microphone, talking about their “parenting philosophy.”
My feet suddenly felt like lead.
I heard people gossiping around me:
“No wonder the kid’s so smart–both parents are so educated.”
“What a perfect couple. You can tell they’re totally in love.”
“Wait, I thought Mr. Howard was married to that teaching assistant from the community college… Jane something?”
Kevin saw me from backstage and walked over with a frown.

Chapter 7
“What are you doing here?”
“Coming to my son’s award ceremony.”
“I don’t need you here. Just go home before people notice you. You’ll embarrass Lorna.”
Looking at this son I’d sacrificed everything to raise, “disappointed” wasn’t even close to what I felt.
I was like some pathetic clown who’d shown up all excited, only to slink away in shame.
Kevin’s teacher asked him, “Who was that woman?”
