Chapter 8
The next day, only Zachary showed up to Kevin’s award ceremony.
When asked where his mother was, Kevin’s face went dark and he stayed silent.
Some classmates played a nasty joke on him.
“Ohhhhh, did mommy abandon you? Is that why she couldn’t be bothered to show up today?”
Kevin absolutely lost it, throwing a punch and getting into a full–blown fight.
Lorna, who’d showed up uninvited, freaked out and tried to break it up: “Stop fighting! I’m Kevin’s mom!”
Kevin was getting his ass kicked by the bigger kid, pinned to the ground with veins bulging on his forehead: “You’re NOT my mom! My real mom is just sick, she’s recovering!”
I looked at the roomful of people with complete exasperation.
Kevin had beaten his classmate bloody–split lip, black eyes, the works. The kid’s parents were furious and came to our house demanding
answers.
I looked at Kevin, still seething with anger. “What happened?”
Sherry jumped in: “Mom, Danny said we don’t have a mother, that you abandoned us. That’s why Kevin fought him.”
I rubbed my temples, irritated, and glanced at Zachary who was standing there tight–lipped and silent.
“Handle your own mess.”
I started to leave, but Sherry grabbed my hand. “Mom, are you really abandoning us?”
I looked at Sherry–raised to be beautiful and spoiled rotten.
In my past life, she’d looked down on me and told me to divorce Zachary to make room for Lorna.
She’d said some truly soul–crushing things.
“Jane, you don’t deserve to be my mother.
I’m begging you–divorce Dad. Mom Lorna and Dad love each other so much, but they’re suffering.
Dad and Mom Lorna loved each other first, so why did you have to come along and ruin everything? You’re absolutely shameless–at least we
have some dignity left.”
Then I looked at Kevin–tall, handsome, and successful.
He’d grown up refusing to acknowledge me as his mother.
Because he rejected me, the whole community never respected me either.
Between public judgment and emotional abuse at home, I’d had a complete breakdown and tried to jump off a building.
Too bad I survived.
Eventually he married Lorna’s daughter, and I didn’t even get a wedding invitation.
