A knock came at my door, and my secretary Linda pushed it open.
“Boss, Mr. Howard is waiting in the conference room.”
I looked up from my computer screen.
“Got it.”
Ten years is enough to change everything.
I’d clawed my way up from a small–town nobody, fighting tooth and nail in the business world until I became a billionaire.
Forbes put me on their cover twice. Wall Street Journal dubbed me “The Ice Queen of Finance.” I owned half of Manhattan’s skyline and had politicians on speed dial.
Kevin had used his brains to escape that dead–end town, graduated college, and built a successful startup with his classmates.
He’d finally earned himself a meeting with me.
When we sat face to face, I skimmed through his partnership proposal.
“Sorry, Mr. Howard, but this proposal doesn’t meet my expectations. Maybe we can work together some other time.”
My smile was warm and confident.
Kevin’s eyes welled up, his lips trembling.
“Understood, Ms. Wilson.”
I stood to leave, but his next words stopped me cold.
“Ms. Wilson… my father passed away… two days ago.”
I glanced back at him. “My condolences.”
I walked out without looking back. Kevin buried his head in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking.
My ex’s death didn’t really affect me. Only when I was drunk at night, looking down at the city lights twinkling below my high–rise, did I feel any hint of nostalgia.
