Ex-Wife Moving Wife Giving Birth? Congratulations, You’re Single Now novel Chapter 57

Chapter 11

Extra Extra Chapter After the Divorce: Zachary’s POV

At the courthouse, when exhausted Jane received her divorce papers, her face lit up with a vitality I hadn’t seen in years.

Looking at this woman who’d been worn down by time and family obligations, my heart ached.

Jane, if you ever want to come back, I’ll always be here waiting.

She finally looked me straight in the eye.

Zachary, I’m not jumping into the same hellhole twice.

And don’t make it sound like I’m the one who screwed up and lost my mind.

My pain came from all of you. You didn’t love me. How can a tree survive without water?

Her words hit me like body blows. I couldn’t find anything to say.

She was absolutely right.

I’d failed as a husband. I’d failed to raise my kids right. I’d committed the ultimate betrayal in marriage.

I watched her board the Greyhound bus. The dust kicked up by the wheels stung my eyes, and tears finally streamed down my face.

When I dragged myself home, the kids had just gotten back from school.

Sherry asked me, Dad, where is she?

Kevin rolled his eyes. Probably off being lazy again. Come on, let’s do homework.

STOP!

He turned around, confused.

For the first time ever, I completely lost it on them.

She’s your MOTHER! The woman who gave birth to you and raised you for fifteen years!

Why do you always think the worst of her? Why do you say such heartbreaking things to her?

My shouting left them shaking. Kevin stared at me, bewildered.

Dad what’s wrongdid something happen to her?

Chapter 11

My eyes were bloodshot as I collapsed onto the front steps.

Jane’s gone. She’s never coming back

Yeah, she should have left long ago. Having a husband like me, kids like you

Sherry burst into tears.

You’re lying! She worries about us more than anythingshe’d never leave! I’m going to find her!

Kevin looked like he’d been struck by lightning, still processing what I’d said.

Lorna, who’d been lurking by the gate, chose that moment to walk in.

Zacharydon’t be too upset. You still have me.

Looking at her, I suddenly started laughing. This calculating womanwhy had it taken me so long to see through her?

Get lost. I want nothing to do with you anymore.

Lorna went to comfort Sherry. Don’t cry, sweetie. Auntie will take care of you from now o

Kevin shoved her away hard.

Get out of our house! This is all your fault! You drove my mom away!

Lorna stumbled backward, dropping her act entirely. She turned to threaten me.

Zachary, if you won’t be with me, I’ll tell the school about your affair!

I looked at this woman I’d protected and cherished from childhood into middle age, feeling nothing but exhaustion.

She was beautiful, wellmaintained, always playing the perfect caring womannothing like Jane.

But I’d been a fool who chose the pretty packaging over substance.

Do whatever you want. I don’t want anything to do with you.

Lorna stormed off in a rage.

Soon after, the school gave

me a harsh reprimand and suspended me for months.

The kids became quiet and withdrawn.

It was like they’d grown up overnight.

Sometimes Sherry would ask me:

Is Mom ever coming back? What if I promise to be good?.

Kevin would look at me with the same hopeful expression.

I’d look away from them.

No, kids. Life lesson number one: don’t take true love for granted.

That was my lesson too.

I’d prided myself on being educated, but I’d never valued genuine love.
