At the courthouse, when exhausted Jane received her divorce papers, her face lit up with a vitality I hadn’t seen in years.

Looking at this woman who’d been worn down by time and family obligations, my heart ached.

“Jane, if you ever want to come back, I’ll always be here waiting.”

She finally looked me straight in the eye.

“Zachary, I’m not jumping into the same hellhole twice.

And don’t make it sound like I’m the one who screwed up and lost my mind.

Her words hit me like body blows. I couldn’t find anything to say.

Kevin looked like he’d been struck by lightning, still processing what I’d said.

I looked at this woman I’d protected and cherished from childhood into middle age, feeling nothing but exhaustion.

She was beautiful, well–maintained, always playing the perfect caring woman–nothing like Jane.

But I’d been a fool who chose the pretty packaging over substance.

“Do whatever you want. I don’t want anything to do with you.”

Lorna stormed off in a rage.

Soon after, the school gave

me a harsh reprimand and suspended me for months.

The kids became quiet and withdrawn.

It was like they’d grown up overnight.
