Chapter 9
Over the next month, Kane Enterprises completely fell apart.
Several major projects collapsed due to broken funding chains. Partners bailed one after another. Stock prices hit rock bottom.
Elaine was personally fired by Victor the day after everything went down. She fled New York in disgrace.
Rumor had it she ended up trafficked to some hellhole overseas–a fate worse than death.
Now, I was sitting at Somni in Los Angeles. Across from me was Julian Sterling, my childhood sweetheart who’d just returned from Cambridge.
He stabbed at the dessert on his plate, teasing me.
“So, Miss Winters, heard you burned through a bunch of family connections for some guy–and walked away with nothing?”
I took a sip of wine, replying lazily, “It was my grandfather’s arrangement. Had to at least give it a shot.”
Julian laughed, eyes crinkling.
“Well, since the engagement’s done, how about giving me a chance?”
“At least we’re from the same world. Plus, we actually know each other.”
I was about to answer when I caught a familiar figure in my peripheral vision–someone at the restaurant entrance.
Dominic.
He was wearing the watch I’d given him. His face was pale, nothing like his usual polished, commanding presence.
A server tried to stop him, saying something.
He shook his head, eyes locked on me, and walked straight over.
“Serena, can we talk? Just the two of us?”
Julian raised an eyebrow at me.
I said nothing.
Dominic’s lashes trembled. Then suddenly, he bowed deeply.
“Serena, I’m here to ask you to come back to Kane Enterprises!”
“You’re the only one who can save the company now!”

I still stayed silent.
Julian set down his fork with a soft laugh.
“Mr. Kane, regretting things now, are we?”
“When you let your secretary publicly humiliate Serena, did you ever think this day would come?”
Dominic bit his lip hard.
“Serena, I screwed up. I know that now.” His eyes were bloodshot when he looked up. “If you don’t come back, thousands of people are gonna lose their jobs. The South District project–if construction stops, the contractors, the workers…”
“Why should I care?” I cut him off. “I’m not part of Kane Enterprises anymore.”
“And you’re the one who fired me.”
Julian suddenly stood. His shoes clicked sharply against the floor.
He was half a head taller than Dominic, his presence commanding.
“Dominic Kane, do you have any idea how many of the Winters family’s resources Seren
1 to help you?”
“She even had an entire emergency team on standby near your office–just so she could ball your ass out whenever you
needed it!”
