Chapter 8
“Dominic.” My voice was calm. “Over the past three months, I asked you out fourteen times. You turned me down fourteen times.”
“Every single time, your excuse was work.”
My gaze shifted to Elaine.
“Later I found out that every time you rejected me, you were actually with her.”
Dominic’s lashes flickered for a moment, but he quickly lifted his chin defiantly. “So what? Who I spend time with is my business!”
“We’re only engaged because of some arrangement our families made. We’re not even legally married!”
“True.” I nodded. “I just wanted to ask–do you know why every proposal you pitched always got approved so smoothly?”
“Do you know why your competitors kept mysteriously dropping out of bids?”
“Do you know why the bank suddenly approved loans you were nowhere near qualified.
Dominic’s face changed. “What… what are you saying?”
Victor let out a heavy sigh and walked over to me, leaning on his cane.
“Dominic, the reason Kane Enterprises went public so smoothly this past year–the reason our stock tripled–it was all because Ms. Winters was pulling strings behind the scenes.”
“That’s impossible!” Dominic’s voice went shrill. “All of that was because of our team’s hard work!”
I pulled out my phone and projected a document onto the screen.
“Mr. Kane, over the past six months, I leveraged seventeen of the Winters family’s business connections to clear every obstacle in Kane Enterprises‘ path.”
The screen filled with jaw–dropping names and figures.
“Including convincing Weston Group to withdraw from the South District land bid–so Kane Enterprises could acquire that prime real estate at rock–bottom price.”
Elaine suddenly scrambled up from the floor, screaming hysterically. “Liar! This is all fake! Mr. Kane, don’t believe her!”
Dominic’s father kicked her hard behind the knee. Elaine collapsed back to the ground.
“Shut your mouth, you worthless piece of trash!”
I watched the scene unfold, feeling nothing.

Chapter 8
I picked up my coat and draped it over my arm.
“Mr. Kane, since you’re both here now, I should go.”
“As for the engagement between our families–let’s end it here.”
“Ms. Winters!” Victor rushed forward to stop me. “This is the Kane family’s fault, but the engagement…”
“Grandpa!”
Dominic suddenly cut him off, eyes brimming with tears but chin held high stubbornly.
“Let her go! I don’t need some fiancée who uses her family’s power to push people around!”
I looked quietly at Dominic–this man I’d been engaged to since childhood.
“Fine.”
I nodded, reached into my pocket, and placed a bracelet on the table.
“This was the engagement token my grandfather exchanged with yours all those years ago. I’m returning it now.”
Dominic’s father looked like death. Victor closed his eyes–suddenly seeming ten years o
As I turned toward the door, I stopped without looking back.
“Oh, one more thing. Starting tomorrow, Winters Corporation will be pulling out of all partnerships with Kane Enterprises.”
“Including the five ongoing projects and the financing agreement we were about to sign.”
Dominic gasped. “You… you can’t do that! Those projects are tied to Kane Enterprises‘ ten–year plan! Thousands of employees. depend on them!”
I glanced back and gave him one last smile.
“I can.”
“Just like you could turn me down fourteen times for some secretary.”
The moment I pushed open the conference room door, I heard Victor’s desperate shout behind me.
“Ms. Winters! Please–give the Kane family one more chance!”
I didn’t stop.
