Chapter 21 Not Interested
That familiar voice made Chloe’s heart sink. But she turned around anyway.
Sure enough, Adrian and Natalie stood together nearby. Adrian held a medication bag, watching her with an unreadable expression.
Chloe quickly hid the medicine behind her back.
Before she could speak, Natalie rushed over, grabbing her hand. “Chloe, what happened in Norway… That was all my fault. I’ve been tormented by guilt ever since. I was planning to find the right time to apologize. Please, don’t blame Adrian.”
Chloe’s frown deepened.
She knew Natalie kept bringing up that incident just to flaunt her importance to Adrian. The constant reminders were unnecessary–Chloe already understood perfectly.
Seeing Chloe’s indifferent expression–no anger, no sadness- Natalie’s eyes hardened.
She glanced at Adrian before continuing, “I had a follow–up appointment today. My parents are abroad on business, so Adrian accompanied me. We’re not what you think. You don’t need to… you don’t need to follow him around.”
Ah, there it was. Natalie thought she was stalking Adrian. No wonder Adrian had been watching her with that inscrutable look.
Chloe smiled. “Ms. James, do you have any doctor friends?”
“What?” Natalie blinked, thrown by the random question.
But she answered with practiced vulnerability, “I wish I did, but I’m not amazing like you, Chloe. I could never be a doctor. My body is so fragile, I…”
Her eyes began to glisten.
Chloe had zero interest in her little performance. She cut straight through the self–pity. “If you did, you could ask them about our reality. Surgeons are extremely busy. We don’t have time for petty things like stalking.”
Natalie froze, finally grasping Chloe’s pointed response to the accusation.
Her expression faltered, and she cast a pleading glance at Adrian, who had been silently watching Chloe all this time.
Seeing her cornered, Adrian finally stepped in.
He moved in front of Chloe and said flatly, “Chloe, that’s not
what Nat meant. She only misspoke because she was anxious to explain herself.”
Chloe met Adrian’s gaze with cool indifference. She gave a slight nod. “Mm. Got it.”
Without another word, she turned to leave.
She had no interest in being part of these two people’s little drama.
Unfortunately, someone just wouldn’t let her go.
Watching her walk away, Natalie darted in front of her again, blocking her path. Biting her lower lip, she pressed, “Chloe, if you weren’t here following Adrian, then why are you here?”
Her face shifted into a mask of concern as she lowered her
voice. “This is the psychological counseling center. They only treat mental illnesses. Do you… have depression too?”
She dragged out the word depression, her lips curling into a mocking smile.
Chloe caught the ridicule, sharp and clear.
She glanced involuntarily at Adrian, then looked away with studied casualness. “Nothing serious. Just jet lag affecting my sleep. Came to get some medication.”
