Chapter 24 She’s My Wife

The realization hit Natalie like a punch to the gut.

She couldn’t accept that possibility. Not after everything she’d done to keep Adrian by her side. There was no way she’d let Chloe just waltz back in and steal him away.

Tears sprang to her eyes as she hung her head, voice trembling. “I’m sorry, Adrian. I didn’t mean to say those things about Chloe. I’m just so worried about my brother that I wasn’t thinking straight.”

“Don’t say things like that again.” Adrian’s tone softened slightly, though anger still simmered beneath the surface.

Because it was Natalie, he showed mercy. But he had no intention of comforting her.

After a moment of silence, something seemed to occur to Adrian. He pulled out his phone and stepped outside to make a call.

When he returned, he said, “I called Professor Lane. If you’re worried about your brother, we can watch from the observation room.”

Natalie nodded quickly. “Thank you, Adrian.”

Adrian gave a brief nod.

Soon, a hospital administrator hurried over. “Mr. Foster, Professor Lane briefed me. Please, this way.”

Adrian and Natalie were led to the surgical observation room, where medical staff could watch ongoing procedures.

From here, they had a clear view of everything happening in the OR.

Adrian spotted Chloe immediately among the medical team.

She wore green surgical scrubs, her hair tucked neatly under a surgical cap. Her face was hidden behind layers of masks, those bright eyes concealed behind medical magnifying glasses.

Even though he couldn’t see her face, Adrian recognized her instantly among all the doctors.

“Cardiopulmonary bypass established.”

Voices echoed from the operating room.

Adrian watched as Chloe stood at the surgical table, scalpel in hand, making a precise incision across the patient’s chest.

Her expression was focused, her movements steady and skilled. 

“Endocardial tear located…”

“Regurgitation detected. Mitral valve prolapse with chordal rupture. Valve won’t close properly. Preparing for valve replacement.”

Chloe’s calm, commanding voice drifted from the operating room in fragments.

In this life–or–death moment, hearing her methodical voice brought an inexplicable sense of reassurance.

This was Adrian’s first time seeing Chloe at work.

Watching her now, even though he couldn’t see her expression, something stirred in his chest–an unfamiliar flutter of emotion.

The observation room’s screens displayed the live feed from below. Chloe’s movements were incredibly skilled, without a trace of hesitation.

The sounds from the operating room continued to filter up.

Gregory Chase, head of cardiothoracic surgery, stood nearby. Catching Adrian’s grave expression, Gregory assumed he was anxious about the patient.

He offered reassurance. “Don’t worry, Mr. Foster. Dr. Hart may be young, but her skills in cardiac surgery are top–notch. The operation will go smoothly.”

Hearing Gregory praise Chloe, Adrian’s lips curved slightly, looking almost proud. “Yeah. She’s my wife. I know her abilities.”

Whether he truly knew or was just being polite was unclear. But Natalie caught the joy and admiration in Adrian’s voice.

He’s angry because Chloe hadn’t told people he’s her husband?

He actually wants everyone to know?
