Chapter 23 Falling for Chloe?
Adrian kept his voice steady as he comforted Natalie. “Don’t worry. I’m at Massachusetts General Hospital right now. Take your time getting here. I’ll handle everything on this end.”
The crying on the other end suddenly stopped. “Adrian, why are you there? Did you… did you go to see Chloe?”
Adrian couldn’t understand why Natalie was fixating on irrelevant details at a time like this, but he had no patience for explanations.
“Don’t worry about that now. Let me check on your brother’s, condition first.”
He hung up without waiting for her response.
Just then, an ambulance blazed through the hospital gates, sirens wailing.
A blood–soaked patient was rushed out on a stretcher by the trauma team.
“Car accident twenty minutes ago,” the lead doctor shouted. “Severe chest trauma, blood pressure differential in both arms. Get him to CT stat–possible aortic dissection. Page cardiac surgery!”
The team raced toward the ER, and Adrian followed immediately.
The man on the stretcher was Natalie’s brother, Jonathan James.
“Has anyone contacted the family?” one of the doctors called out.
“Right here,” Adrian said, stepping forward quickly. ·
“Come with me.”

Meanwhile, Chloe had just taken Isabella’s prescribed medication when the on–call room phone rang.
A panicked voice came through. “Dr. Hart, car accident in the ER with suspected aortic dissection. We need you down here now.”
Chloe shot up. “On my way.”
She left the scattered pills on her desk and rushed out, jogging toward the emergency building.
When Chloe reached the ER, the first person she saw was
Adrian in his expensive suit, standing by the trauma bay doors with a deeply troubled expression.
“Dr. Hart’s here!”
Someone called out, and Adrian looked up instinctively. It really was Chloe.
His expression brightened slightly as he walked toward her.
“Do you know the patient?” Chloe asked before he could speak.
If not, there was no reason for Adrian to still be lingering in the ER after he’d already left.
Adrian hesitated, then nodded. “He’s Nat’s brother.”
Chloe nodded. That explained it.
She didn’t ask follow–up questions and went to examine the
unconscious man.
“CT results ready?” she asked the attending beside her.
“Right here.” Another doctor brought over the scans.
Chloe studied them, her brow furrowing deeper with each image.
“Type A aortic dissection. We need to operate immediately. 3/8
After saying this, Chloe headed toward the operating room.
Adrian caught up and grabbed her arm after only a few steps. “How bad is it?”
Chloe met his eyes directly. “Very bad. The aortic tear requires emergency surgery. Everything else can wait until after.”
Her tone was crisp and authoritative–completely different from the gentle, accommodating Chloe that Adrian usually saw.
