Chapter 22 You Forgot?

Back at the hospital, Chloe dropped off the medicine in her office, then headed to the cafeteria for dinner.

After grabbing a quick bite, she took a stroll on the spacious lawn downstairs.

During her walk, she encountered a few familiar patients with their families. She chatted with them briefly and offered some care instructions. Before she knew it, another hour had slipped by.

When she stepped out of the elevator and rounded the corner, she spotted a familiar figure standing near her office.

He had his head down, lost in his thoughts.

Chloe’s steps faltered for a moment before she approached.

Hearing footsteps, Adrian looked up and met Chloe’s puzzled gaze.

“What are you doing here?” Chloe walked past him, unlocked her office door, and stepped inside.

Adrian followed, his expression cold, his piercing gaze fixed on her face. “Why didn’t you answer your phone?”

Chloe paused. She was actually wondering why Adrian was here. Didn’t he take Natalie home?

“I called you several times. I’ve been waiting here for an hour.” Adrian’s voice had a slight edge of hurt to it.

“Really? Was something wrong?” Chloe looked confused as she pulled her phone out of the drawer. “My bad, I left it in here.”

Hearing her distant, casual apology, Adrian fell silent.

He just stared at Chloe’s face without saying anything. All his anger from the last hour just disappeared when he saw how little she cared.

After what felt like forever, he said softly, “I told you at lunch we were having dinner together tonight.”

Chloe completely forgot. Or maybe she’d fallen for Adrian’s promises too many times, just to end up waiting by herself. So she stopped believing him.

When Adrian mentioned dinner during lunch, she just said okay without giving it much thought. Of course she didn’t remember.

But the funny thing was, while she blew it off, Adrian took it seriously.

Now everything was weird and uncomfortable.

Adrian read the expression on her face and, for once, understood exactly what she was thinking.

The suppressed anger lodged in his chest, unable to rise or dissipate.

He asked coldly, “You already ate?”

Chloe hesitated, then nodded.

“So you forgot?” Adrian’s voice grew even icier.

Chloe didn’t want to admit it, so she defended herself. “Į thought you’d have dinner with Ms. James, so I ate alone.”

After all, he’d stood her up countless times before.

At least she’d forgotten today. If she’d remembered and waited around only to be stood up again, she would’ve gone hungry.

She heard Adrian take a sharp breath, as if trying to force down

the fire in his chest.

“If I made plans to eat with you, how could I not follow through?” Adrian said, then met Chloe’s pointed look.

That look held barely concealed mockery.

Adrian’s face dropped. Probably thinking about all the times he’d bailed on plans because of Natalie, he couldn’t find a single word to say.

He coughed awkwardly. “I came straight here after taking Nat home. I… I wasn’t planning to cancel.”
