Mrs. Wolfe was so shocked that the words escaped before she could think. “What? She’s the fiancée?”

On the other end of the line, Ares’s voice still carried a faint smile, yet it sent a chill through everyone who heard it.

“So, Mrs. Wolfe… Do you have a problem with my fiancée?”

“And you even went out of your way to label someone as my childhood sweetheart just to make things difficult for her.”

“Has business been going so well for the Wolfe family lately?”

Mrs. Wolfe panicked and shoved her daughter forward.

“Emily, hurry-say something!”

Iris calmly set her phone on the table so they could speak directly.

“Ares, I never meant to interfere in you young people’s affairs. Let Emily explain!”

“Well? Say something, Emily!”

Emily bit her lip. After a long pause, she finally spoke. “I’m sorry, Mr. Barclay. I caused you trouble. My mother didn’t mean to get into a conflict with Miss Noir. I apologize to Miss Noir on her behalf.”

Mrs. Wolfe had never expected her daughter to apologize so readily. The frustration lodged in her chest with nowhere to go.

Iris added calmly, “This has nothing to do with Miss Wolfe. The issue is between Mrs. Wolfe and me.”

Emily had done nothing wrong.

There was no reason for her to apologize.

Standing nearby, the store manager finally understood the situation.

Miss Noir held every advantage.

Not only was she one of C Jewelry’s gemstone suppliers, she was also Ares Barclay’s fiancée- and she was being remarkably reasonable throughout the entire ordeal.

As for Mrs. Wolfe… she had done nothing but throw a tantrum and drag her own daughter into an impossible situation.

The manager quickly stepped in to smooth things over.

“Mrs. Wolfe, Heart of Dawn is a birthday gift Miss Noir reserved for her mother.”

“She also reserved it first.”

“Please return it to her.”

“I’d be happy to show you pieces from our other collections.”

After hearing Ares’s attitude, Mrs. Wolfe realized she had gotten herself into serious trouble.

Reluctantly, she unclasped the necklace and handed it back to the manager.

“I’ll have it cleaned, sanitized, and gift-wrapped immediately.”

“Gina, please assist Mrs. Wolfe with our other collections.”

Mrs. Wolfe no longer had any desire to stay. She flicked her sleeve impatiently.

“I’m done shopping. We’re going home.”

Emily gave Iris a small nod before helping her mother leave.

They walked slowly enough that Iris could still hear Mrs. Wolfe scolding her.

“What is wrong with you? You grew up with Ares Barclay! How did you let another woman beat you to him? The Wolfe family invested so much in you, and it all went to waste?”

She refused to accept it.

Emily had no choice but to keep trying.

It wasn’t until they were out of Iris’s sight that she finally spoke.

“Mom, you saw them yourself. They’re in love. This isn’t something I can change just because I keep trying.”

“The Wolfe family doesn’t have much influence.”

Mrs. Wolfe adjusted her coat before fixing her daughter with a serious look.

“We spent years raising you, making sure you learned everything Grandpa Barclay liked, all so you could marry into the Barclay family.”

“You know the kind of man your father will marry you off to if you don’t end up with Ares.”

“I’m doing this for your own good.”

“I don’t want to see you married off to some older man with a bad temper.”

“So you need to try harder.”

Emily lowered her gaze.

“…Okay.”

Then she quietly helped her mother out.

Iris remained on the sofa, waiting for the manager to finish wrapping the necklace.

As she reached for her phone, she realized the call was still connected.

“You never hung up?”

There was a brief silence before Ares answered.

“Grandpa Wolfe saved my grandfather’s life once. My grandfather has looked after the Wolfe family ever since.”

“I know.”

He’d told her that before.

“Miss Wolfe and I only see each other at New Year gatherings.”
