The room was dark.

Without saying a word, Iris walked inside and set the tray of food on the table.

She knew the layout of the house by heart. Even in the darkness, she moved without the slightest hesitation.

Moonlight spilled faintly through the window.

Emily watched Iris standing there, her fingers tightening around her phone as she struggled with something she couldn’t bring herself to say.

Seeing her silence, Iris finally spoke.

“If there’s nothing you want to say to me… then I’ll go.”

She turned and walked out.

After Iris left, Emily looked down at the messages on her phone.

They were all from the Wolfe family.

[Useless! You can’t even keep a man interested! So what if he likes Iris Noir now? If nothing else works, put on something sexy and climb into his bed! What man could resist that?]
D

The final message…

Had come from her own brother.

The aroma of the meal slowly filled the room.

She stared blankly at it.

‘Why… Why hasn’t anyone asked whether I’m adjusting to life in Ashford County? Whether I’m doing okay?‘

Back in the car, she’d watched Iris video call her parents.

Richard Noir and Eleanor Noir had fussed over her nonstop, asking if she’d eaten,

if she’d slept well, whether she was tired.

Her brother had joined in too.

The entire family adored her.

Emily lowered her eyes.

She couldn’t help wondering…

‘If I really did steal Ares Barclay away… would my family finally treat me the way Iris’s parents treat her?‘

That night, everyone carried their own thoughts.

Some slept soundly.

Others stayed awake until dawn.

On Sunday, Julie continued learning ironwork from Mr. Ashcroft.

Emily sat nearby watching, though she still wasn’t allowed to practice herself.

“Where are you two going?” Mr. Ashcroft looked up just as Iris appeared, fully dressed with her bag over one shoulder.

Ares followed behind her. “I want to visit the old Noir residence.”

William muttered, “The old Noir residence? Didn’t it burn to the ground? What’s there to see?”

Before he’d even finished speaking, Mr. Ashcroft pinched him hard.

Only then did he realize how inappropriate his comment had been.

“Go ahead. Just come back early. If there’s anything you’d like for dinner, tell William now.”

Iris showed no hesitation whatsoever. She rattled off a long list of dishes.

After thinking for a second, she added one more.

“Steamed sea bass.”

Ares paused mid–step behind her. That was his favorite. His mood instantly brightened as he hurried after her.

Today the driver had the day off, so Ares was behind the wheel again.

After fastening Iris’s seat belt, he smiled. “You finally remember what I like to eat.”

Iris looked at him in confusion. “I didn’t remember. I wanted to eat it.”

Ares laughed despite himself. He lightly smacked the back of her hand.

“Could you at least humor me once?”

He was still pretending to be offended when he caught a glimpse of her through the corner of his eye.

She had turned toward the window.

The corners of her lips had curved upward ever so slightly.

She’d tricked him.

Using the address Mr. Ashcroft had given them, the two drove without incident.

The Noir family’s original estate had once been several times larger than Mr. Ashcroft’s current residence.

Now…

It had been reduced to ruins.

More than ten years had passed.

The remaining traces had been worn away by wind and rain until very little was left.

If not for the ancient tree they both remembered, they might not even have been able to locate the estate.

“Mr. Ashcroft mentioned a tree tied with pink ribbons.”

“This should be it.”

Looking over the ruins before her, Iris slowly stepped forward.

She had always suspected that being taken away from Eleanor Noir all those years ago hadn’t been an accident.

Perhaps…

There would be clues here.

Ares understood exactly why she’d come. He quietly searched through the ruins beside her.

For quite a while, Iris wandered the site, taking photographs from every angle.

“…Nothing.” She shook her head.

Too much time had passed. It seemed more likely that the answers lay with the people who had been involved back then.

Then, near what appeared to have once been the family shrine…

She noticed something unusual.

Half–buried beneath weeds lay a small bronze figurine.

Years of exposure to the elements had slowly uncovered it.

Turning it over, she found a single character engraved on the back.

Noir.

Ares looked at it. “Should we ask Uncle Richard and Aunt Eleanor about it when we get back?”

Iris nodded. She tucked the little bronze figure into her bag.

At least the trip hadn’t been entirely fruitless.

By the time they returned, dusk had fallen.
